The machina knights near the drilling rig were defeated. The inside of the rig is free to be examined now.
Marni's Drilling Rig is located near the southeast border of the world map. The area is part of the Fading Tinkerton quest chain, though players can also trigger the quest by liberating the rig from its occupants.
The enemies guarding the rig are mechanical bots and machina knights. These enemies are vulnerable to lightning damage, so equipping lightning-imbued attacks or gear will speed up the clearing process.
After clearing the enemies, the Abandoned Drilling Rig quest requires reactivating the rig through a series of interactive puzzle steps. If done in the correct order, the quest completes in roughly 10 seconds. Follow these steps precisely:
Ignite the fuel: Go to the main deck, grab the oil canister, and insert it into the oil canister slot. Force palm the slot closed, then pull the handle for a couple of seconds to ignite the fuel.
Activate the compounder: Walk into the giant button on the compounder and push it to turn the machine on.
Mix the compound: Use the hand wheels to raise the yellow substance to 4 notches and lower the red substance to 1 notch. This produces a bright yellow compound.
Start the crusher: Go upstairs and turn the hand wheel on the crusher all the way to the right until it begins operating.
Activate the bottling machine: Drop off the ledge behind the bottling machine and pull the lever to activate it.
Activate the ingredient dispenser: Turn the hand wheel on the ingredient dispenser to reveal a lever, then pull the lever to activate it.
Activate the washer: Turn the hand wheel behind the dispenser to activate the washer.
Open the cultivation room: Kick the foot button on the cultivation room door, then push the lever to open it.
Activate the sprayers: Go into the cultivation room and pull the hanging handle to activate the sprayers.
If all steps were completed correctly, the quest finishes almost immediately. You can verify success by checking that yellow elixir bottles are being produced on the conveyor line.
After reactivating the rig, a storage unit in the cultivation room opens. Inside is the fertilizer sprayer, a useful tool for farming activities. Grab it from the now-open storage unit before leaving.
Completing Marne's Drilling Rig is the first step of a two-part chain that unlocks a permanent reward in Tinkerton. After the quest fires a cut scene at the cleared rig, you receive a follow-up quest called Reactivate the Drilling Rig which walks you through a small in-rig puzzle and sends you back to Cordelia in Tinkerton. Once Cordelia finishes her dialogue, fast travel away from Tinkerton and then return. The town provisioner's stock is now permanently expanded to include three items that are otherwise hard to find in the early game:
Wooden Lantern, a cosmetic lantern swap that confirms the lantern slot has swappable variants at all.
Flawless Timber, the top-tier logging material normally restricted to artisan's axe gathering.
Pure White Dye, the rare white dye used for armor and cloak tinting.
Players who skip or delay the drilling rig chain can miss this vendor entirely, because the provisioner's expanded inventory does not flag itself on the quest rewards screen. If you see the Marne's Drilling Rig quest marker anywhere in your journal, make it a priority for the Tinkerton stock boost alone.
The rig is the canonical gate for the Pure White Dye vendor unlock. The puzzle sequence below covers the streamlined nine-step path used to spawn the back-alley merchant; it is the same set of interactions described in the in-game journal under the Reactivate the Drilling Rig follow-up. Track the quest in the journal before starting; otherwise some interactions will not register.
Step | Location | Action |
|---|---|---|
1 | Main dock area | Pick up an oil barrel and place it in the oil-barrel slot, then use Force Palm on the slot to close it |
2 | Just right of the oil slot | Find the two wheels and turn both clockwise to lock them |
3 | Upper platform | Climb up and kick the trapdoor open with your feet |
4 | Upper platform | Interact with the two levers right next to each other |
5 | Revolving door (two lights) | Jump down to the revolving door and use Force Palm to clear the path underneath |
6 | Valve room | Repair the two conduits to restore power |
7 | Valve room | Pull the new lever to unlock the path forward |
8 | Path to final room | Use Nature's Grasp to swing into the final room |
9 | Final room | Drop down, crouch, and Force Palm the three screws in sequence to finish the rig repair |
Steps 1, 5, and 9 all require Force Palm; step 8 requires Nature's Grasp. Both abilities should be unlocked before starting the rig liberation to avoid backtracking. Steps 6 and 7 are sometimes performed in the same pass: the lever only spawns after both conduits are repaired, so missing the activation on the first conduit silently blocks the rest of the chain.
Each step opens the next stage of the rig interior. Skipping ahead is not possible; the trapdoor, revolving door, and final room are all blocked until their respective prerequisites are met.
The dual-wheel step (step 2) is easy to miss because the wheels sit slightly off to the right of the oil-barrel slot. Both wheels must be fully locked or step 3 will not trigger.
If the final screws do not appear after dropping into the last room, return to the valve room and verify both conduits show the powered indicator. The screws only spawn when full power has been restored upstream.
Once the rig puzzle finishes and the closing dialogue at the questgiver wraps up, fast travel out of the area and return. On the second arrival, a back-alley vendor spawns at the rig itself, just above the Delesyia I label on the map. The merchant sells two rare items that are otherwise difficult to acquire:
Item | Notes |
|---|---|
Permanent grayscale dye, one-time activation via Use in inventory then dye house application at Wyanut | |
Top-tier logging material, rare way to top up Flawless Timber without farming trees |
The vendor does not appear if the player remains in the area immediately after the quest completes. The trigger is specifically the fast travel out and back, which acts as a region reload. Sleeping or waiting for an in-game day cycle does not produce the same effect.
Players hunting Pure White Dye specifically should plan to make the trip in a single session: the puzzle, the dialogue close-out, and the fast-travel-back-and-buy sequence all take under twenty minutes once the rig is liberated. Compare with the Pure Black Dye chain, which uses a similar back-alley vendor pattern at the Mock Root Windmill.
