The Reed Devil is a target you must track across two back-to-back main quests in Chapter 3 of Crimson Desert: Nonhuman and Seed of Unease. Both quests lack clear map markers, which makes finding the Reed Devil's location one of the most confusing objectives in the entire game. This guide covers the full tracking sequence from Grace Manor through to the final altar in Reedwind Valley where the Dance with the Devil boss fight begins.
The lantern is your only navigation tool for these quests. The yellow tracking line it reveals on the ground is the sole indicator of where to go. If you lose the trail at any point, toggle the lantern off and back on to reset it.
You must have progressed through Chapter 3 to the point where the Nonhuman quest becomes active. This happens after completing earlier Chapter 3 objectives in the Hernand region.
The Reed Devil is a formidable boss that hits hard even during the brief encounters in the canyon. Arrive prepared:
Preparation | Details |
|---|---|
Recommended Equipment | Tier 2-4 armor minimum. The Canta armor set from the Hernand reputation vendor is a strong choice. |
Healing Supplies | Bring plenty of cooked meals and recovery items. The canyon is long with frequent enemy spawns. |
Useful Ability | Blinding Flash (Left Bumper + Right Bumper) is invaluable for stunning the Reed Devil. |
Shield | The Reed Devil throws knives that can be blocked with a shield. |
The first phase takes place during the Nonhuman quest. Follow these steps:
Go to the upper floor of Grace Manor and speak with the Servant NPC.
In the same room, observe the blue outlines representing a memory. View the memory called "Grace Manor."
Exit through the window and activate your lantern (L1 / LB) to reveal a yellow tracking line on the ground.
Follow the yellow line. You will encounter groups of enemies along the way. Defeat them and keep following the line.
The path leads to a hut. A cutscene plays when you arrive, showing the Reed Devil escaping.
The enemies along this initial path are not particularly dangerous, but they slow you down. Dispatch them quickly and stay on the yellow line. If the line seems to disappear, move your camera around. The lantern sometimes needs a moment to redraw the trail after combat.
After the hut cutscene, the Seed of Unease quest begins immediately. Use your lantern again (L1 / LB) to pick up the yellow tracking line from the hut.
Head southwest from the hut toward a canyon entrance.
Travel along the canyon road. The trail snakes through Steel Mountain toward the south.
The Reed Devil will appear alongside other enemies as you move through the canyon. Damage him whenever he materializes.
He disappears after taking enough hits in each encounter. Do not try to finish him here.
Continue along the linear canyon path, following the yellow lantern line south.
You can run past most of the spawning enemies. Focus on hitting the Reed Devil when he shows up, then keep moving.
The canyon section is the longest part of this quest. Enemy groups spawn repeatedly, and the Reed Devil makes brief appearances between encounters. The best strategy is to prioritize forward progress. You do not need to defeat every enemy group. Hit the Reed Devil when he appears, dodge his attacks, and keep pushing south.
Make sure to heal with food items regularly. The Reed Devil hits hard even during these brief canyon encounters, and taking cumulative damage without healing can leave you in a bad position for the boss fight ahead.
Follow the canyon south until you emerge into a large open field of tall swaying reeds. This is Reedwind Valley, the arena for the boss fight. Look for an altar in the middle of this field. It sits roughly in the center of the southern meadow at the end of the canyon path.
Walk to the altar in the center of the reed field.
Inspect the small straw figure sitting on the altar (this is the Devil of the Reed Field's Doll).
This completes the Seed of Unease quest and triggers the Dance with the Devil boss fight.
The altar can be hard to spot because it blends into the tall reeds. If you do not see it immediately, move toward the center of the field. The objective marker should appear once you are close enough.
The boss fight against the Reed Devil has two distinct phases:
Phase One: The Reed Devil moves quickly around the arena, attacking with rapid flurry combos and throwing knives. Maintain your guard, parry when possible, and dodge his multi-hit combos. Block the thrown knives with your shield. Use Blinding Flash (LB + RB) to stun him and create openings for damage.
Phase Two: The Reed Devil summons totems around the arena. You must destroy these totems using heavy attacks or Force Palm abilities. Multiple copies of the Reed Devil may appear simultaneously during this phase. Destroy the totems quickly before you get overwhelmed.
Defeating the Reed Devil rewards you with the Sunset Reed Cloth Gloves. These gloves come with two perks: the Fluttering Reeds ability and passive health regeneration. They are among the better glove options available in Chapter 3.
The lantern is your only navigation tool for these quests. If you lose track of the yellow line, toggle the lantern off and back on.
Bring plenty of healing supplies. The Reed Devil is strong, and the journey through the canyon is long with frequent enemy spawns.
You do not need to defeat every enemy group in the canyon. Prioritize hitting the Reed Devil when he appears and running past everything else.
The altar in the open field can be hard to spot among the tall reeds. It sits roughly in the center of the southern meadow.
Blinding Flash is the single most useful ability for this boss fight. It interrupts the Reed Devil's charge attacks and creates safe windows to deal damage.
If you are undergeared, consider improving your Hernand reputation to purchase the Canta armor set from the Hernand Castle reputation vendor before attempting this fight.
