Antumbra's Sword is a void spirit boss encountered at the Sanctum of Absolution in the Hernand region. It leads Antumbra's Order, a dark faction tied to the Abyss. The entity serves as judge and executioner for those who defy the power of darkness, and it announces itself with the declaration: "Only ruin awaits who defy the darkness! Your heart is forfeit."
Players face Antumbra's Sword during the Cloister of Ruination quest, which takes them into the depths of the Sanctum of Absolution. The boss also appears during The Witch of Wisdom questline, a faction quest unlocked in Act 5 of the main story through The Missing Seal. During that quest, the player meets a witch who introduces the abyss gear system and sends them to purify corrupted sanctums across the world. The Sanctum of Absolution is one of four such sanctums in the Hernand region.
Unlike the Excavatron or other physically imposing bosses, Antumbra's Sword fights with speed, stealth, and dark magic. It vanishes into an invisible wraith form, spawns shadow copies of itself, and unleashes sweeping blade attacks that punish passive play. The boss can also send out curved lines of energy through its wraith copies, making the arena dangerous even when the boss itself is not visible.

The Sanctum of Absolution sits in the far southwest of Hernand, to the left of the Steel Mountains. There is a teleporter close by in the mountains, so once you have discovered it you can fast travel back if you need to restock supplies.
The sanctum is populated with enemies guarding the path to the boss arena. You can choose to clear them out before or after the boss fight, but it is generally recommended to tackle the boss first. This preserves your healing items and stamina for the encounter itself. If you want to skip the enemies entirely, look for a wall you can climb and a zipline that leads directly to the boss arena entrance.
Antumbra's Sword is an agile, stealth-focused boss. It relies on dark smoke to turn invisible and reposition around the arena before delivering fast sword strikes. The boss also spawns wraith copies of itself that attack independently. Learning to read the black trails on the floor during its stealth phase is the key to surviving this fight.
Attack | Description | How to Counter |
|---|---|---|
Shadow Slash | Vanishes into dark smoke and reappears behind the player, delivering a quick diagonal slice. The attack comes out fast and is easy to miss if you are not watching for the smoke trail. | Block immediately when you see the vanish animation, then counterattack. The recovery after the slash is brief but punishable. |
Three Slash Combo | Performs three consecutive sword strikes in rapid succession. Each hit staggers slightly, and taking all three deals heavy cumulative damage. This is the boss's most dangerous melee pattern and can one-shot under-leveled players. | Dodge roll through the first strike to get behind the boss, then counterattack while the remaining swings whiff. Alternatively, use the arena pillar as cover (see Strategy below). |
Stealth Phase | The boss becomes an invisible wraith and moves around the arena. You can track its position by watching for black trails along the floor. While in stealth, the boss tries to close distance quickly and follow up with rapid attacks. | Spam dodge and parry to avoid incoming strikes. Blinding Flash can pseudo-track the boss during stealth and interrupt the transition. |
Wraith Copies | The boss spawns shadow copies of itself that perform coordinated attacks. These wraith copies also shoot curved lines of energy across the arena. The triple-hit attack performed with wraith copies is the single most dangerous move in the fight. | Position yourself near the arena pillar so the triple-hit from wraith copies strikes the pillar instead of you. The curved energy waves may still pass through the pillar but deal reduced damage. |
Dark Smoke Teleport | Dissolves into a cloud of dark smoke and relocates to a random position in the arena. This repositioning tool often precedes an offensive follow-up or a transition into stealth phase. | Track the smoke trail to predict where the boss will reappear. Dash toward that position and strike during the brief materialization animation before it can act. |
Sword Rings of Darkness | Releases circular blade waves that radiate outward from its body in all directions. The rings expand quickly and cover a wide area. | Create distance as soon as you see the charge-up animation, then dodge roll through the rings if you cannot outrange them. |
Slashing Waves (Unblockable) | Sends ground-based slash arcs forward in a straight line. These travel along the floor and cannot be blocked, dealing significant damage on contact. | Dodge to the side rather than backward, since the waves travel a long distance. Getting behind the boss during this attack gives you a free punish window. |
Antumbra's Sword rewards a defensive, counter-focused playstyle. Rushing in aggressively will get you killed because the boss can teleport out of your combos and retaliate instantly. Instead, wait for its attacks to finish, punish during recovery windows, and then disengage before it teleports again.
The fight has a rhythm: Antumbra's Sword teleports, attacks, briefly pauses, and then teleports again. Your goal is to land one or two hits during each pause window and avoid overcommitting. Greed is the biggest killer in this fight. Stamina management is particularly important here. If you run out mid-fight, you will not be able to evade the boss's high-damage slam attacks, which can quickly end the attempt.
There is a large pillar in the center of the boss arena, and it cannot be destroyed by any of Antumbra's attacks. This pillar is your best friend during the fight. By positioning yourself near the pillar, you can bait the boss into its triple-hit combo (the one enhanced by wraith copies) and have the strikes connect with the pillar instead of you.
The wraith energy wave attacks may still pass through the pillar, but they deal less damage when they do. The general strategy is to circle the pillar, let the boss commit to its big attacks against the obstruction, and then punish during recovery. This approach is especially useful if you are under-leveled or low on healing items.
Blinding Flash is one of the most effective tools against Antumbra's Sword. It can stun the boss briefly and interrupt its attack sequences. What makes it especially powerful here is that Blinding Flash works even during the boss's stealth transitions; you can blind Antumbra's Sword as it attempts to turn invisible, canceling the stealth phase entirely.
The Blinding Flash Finisher combo (unlocked by spending one Abyss Artifact in the skill tree) lets you follow up the initial stun with a barrage of strikes. This deals excellent damage and sends the boss flying. After the Blinding Flash Finisher combo, the boss typically jumps away or transitions back into stealth, so prepare to start dodging again immediately.
For the boss's Ground Thrust (which sends out multiple sword waves), use Blinding Flash as soon as it lifts its sword with both hands. For the triple Shadow Strike teleport combo, use Blinding Flash after dodging the third teleport attack to cancel the remaining sequence.
Spears are the recommended weapon type for this encounter. Their reach lets you tag the boss during its brief recovery windows without standing directly in melee range, where its follow-up combos are most dangerous. Two-handed swords also work well if you prefer heavier stagger damage, but the slower swing speed means tighter punish timings.
Every time Antumbra's Sword teleports via Dark Smoke, it has a brief materialization window where it cannot attack or block. If you can predict where it will reappear (watch the direction of the smoke trail), dashing toward that spot and attacking immediately is the most efficient way to deal damage. This is especially effective with a spear's forward thrust attacks.
The Slashing Waves are the most dangerous ranged attack because they are unblockable and cover a long distance. When you see the charge-up (the sword glows and dips toward the ground), immediately dodge sideways. Do not try to outrun them by backpedaling because the waves travel faster than your sprint speed. Sidestepping gives you a clear opening to rush in and counterattack.
Stock up on HP recovery items from cooking or merchants before entering the Sanctum of Absolution. If a Grind Stone or Anvil is available nearby, use them for temporary weapon and armor buffs. The extra damage from a weapon buff helps shorten the fight, which matters because longer fights give Antumbra's Sword more chances to chip away at your health with teleport combos.
Defeating Antumbra's Sword clears the Sanctum of Absolution and completes the Cloister of Ruination quest. You receive the following:
Reward | Description |
|---|---|
Abyss Artifact x1 | A sealed Abyss Artifact used to upgrade abilities and unlock new powers in the skill tree. |
Vessel of Dark Pursuit | A two-handed sword (see below for full details). One of the strongest weapons available in the mid-game, capable of carrying you through to endgame content with continued refinement. |
The Vessel of Dark Pursuit is a two-handed sword dropped by Antumbra's Sword upon defeat. It comes at Refinement 4 with 25 Attack and three abyss gear slots pre-filled:
Abyss Gear Slot | Effect |
|---|---|
Attack 1 | Increases base attack power |
Crit Rate 1 | Increases critical hit chance |
Wound of Darkness | Unique abyss gear. Pressing left click + right click (the same input as Turning Slash) consumes additional spirit to perform a Wound of Darkness attack, sending out a projectile wave of dark energy. The animation mirrors the wave attacks used by Antumbra's Sword itself during the boss fight. |
The Wound of Darkness attack is mapped to the same keybind as Turning Slash, so investing points in Turning Slash directly improves this weapon's special ability. The combination of a strong base weapon with an innate ranged attack makes the Vessel of Dark Pursuit one of the best two-handed swords you can obtain before the endgame.
Because Wound of Darkness shares its input with Turning Slash, upgrading Turning Slash in the skill tree directly amplifies the Vessel of Dark Pursuit's special attack. The following Turning Slash upgrades are especially valuable:
Proficiency: Allows you to chain Turning Slash from other abilities, letting you weave Wound of Darkness waves into existing combos without breaking your flow.
Expertise: Holding the input performs a powerful downward strike follow-up after the initial slash. This adds a hard-hitting finisher to each Wound of Darkness use.
Rend Armor: The attack ignores super armor and sends enemies flying. Combined with Wound of Darkness, this makes Turning Slash effective against heavily armored enemies and large groups alike.
With all three upgrades active, the Vessel of Dark Pursuit becomes a versatile weapon that handles both single-target boss damage and crowd control. The ranged wave from Wound of Darkness lets you deal damage at a distance while Turning Slash's melee follow-ups punish anything that closes in.
The Leather Helm of the Fallen Kingdom, found at the Sanctum of Benediction, comes with the Momentum abyss gear pre-installed. Momentum provides a 35% increase to Turning Slash damage. Since Wound of Darkness shares its input and scaling with Turning Slash, the Momentum bonus applies to the Vessel of Dark Pursuit's special attack as well. Obtaining both items creates one of the strongest weapon and armor combinations available in the mid-game.
The Leather Helm of the Fallen Kingdom is hidden behind a secret door inside the Sanctum of Benediction. To reach it, look for a door that appears to be jiggling or vibrating. Light the brazier to the right of the nearby stairs and the door will open. Every sanctum in the game has a hidden area like this, so it is worth exploring each one thoroughly after clearing the boss.
Antumbra's Sword is a manifestation of the Abyss, the mysterious realm of floating islands that exists above Pywel. The entity leads Antumbra's Order, a group of void spirits that enforces the will of darkness within sanctums scattered across the world. The Sanctum of Absolution is one such location where these spirits congregate.
The name "Antumbra" refers to the region of shadow beyond an eclipse, where light is partially obscured but not fully blocked. This fits the entity's nature as something that exists between the material world and the Abyss, not fully in either realm. Antumbra wizards appear in other Abyss-related content throughout the game (including the Spire of Frost), suggesting that Antumbra's Order has a broader presence in Pywel's supernatural hierarchy.
The boss's declaration about condemning those who "defy the darkness" implies that it views itself as a guardian of some natural order. Whether the Abyss and its spirits are truly malevolent or simply operating under a different set of rules is left ambiguous by the game's narrative.
Do not chase Antumbra's Sword after it teleports. Wait for it to reappear and commit to an attack, then punish the recovery.
The smoke trail during Dark Smoke Teleport moves in the direction the boss is traveling. Use this to predict where it will materialize.
During the stealth phase, watch for black trails on the floor. These indicate the boss's current position even while it is invisible.
Fight near the arena pillar whenever possible. The pillar blocks the boss's triple-hit wraith combo entirely if you position correctly.
Blinding Flash is the single best skill for this fight. It costs no spirit or stamina to use and can interrupt the boss's stealth transitions, Ground Thrust, and teleport combos.
Sword Rings of Darkness has a visible charge-up animation. If you are close, dodge roll through the rings rather than away from them, since they expand outward.
The Three Slash Combo is the easiest attack to punish. Dodge roll through the first swing and you will end up behind the boss with time for two or three hits.
Bring extra healing items. This fight involves lots of unavoidable chip damage from the teleportation-heavy pattern, so sustain matters more than burst damage.
If using a spear, the forward thrust attack is ideal for catching the boss during materialization windows. Time it so the thrust connects just as the boss solidifies.
Consider tackling the boss before clearing out the sanctum enemies. This preserves resources for the harder fight.
After defeating the boss, explore the sanctum thoroughly. Like all sanctums in the game, the Sanctum of Absolution has hidden areas with additional loot.
