Raw Power Games is an independent video game studio headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark. The studio was founded in 2022 and is the developer and publisher of Chronicles: Medieval, its debut title.
Team
The studio employs more than 100 senior developers based across Europe. Team members have backgrounds in major published titles across the industry, including roles in development on games such as The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2, the Assassin's Creed series, the Hitman series, and the Grand Theft Auto series.
Confirmed team members include Lead Gameplay Programmer James Vango and Art Director Lulu Zhang. Lead Producer Sam Millen has appeared in developer communications describing the game's vision and design philosophy. Senior Designer Gareth James Bourn leads work on battles and playable instances, and Andrzej Zawadzki and Alessia Nigretti are among the game designers and developers featured in the studio's developer spotlights.
Technology
Chronicles: Medieval runs on Unreal Engine 5 combined with Raw Power Games' proprietary Asgard technology. Asgard is an in-house simulation framework built on top of Unreal Engine 5 and is designed to power dynamic unit behavior and shifting supply lines at scale across large-scale battle scenarios. The studio also builds its battlefields with an in-house procedural tool called Ymir, which generates maps during development rather than at runtime; it has committed to releasing Ymir to the modding community once the game reaches version 1.0.
In-House Tools
Beyond the Asgard simulation framework, Raw Power Games has built a toolkit of proprietary tools that generate the game's world and content, all authored inside Unreal Engine 5 so the same tools can be handed to modders.
Tool | Purpose |
|---|---|
Asgard | Proprietary simulation framework built on Unreal Engine 5, designed to power dynamic unit behaviour and shifting supply lines at scale. |
Ymir | Landscape and biome generation tool, also used to procedurally generate battlefields during development. Committed for release to the modding community at version 1.0. |
Borg | Procedural settlement generator that builds villages, towns, cities, and tournament grounds, using a layout system based on Voronoi diagrams and historical research. |
Skapa | Asset-composition tool that uses Unreal's Procedural Content Generation (PCG) graphs to build varied, handcrafted building and environment pieces from modular kits. |
Actor Assembly | Tool for creating unit and troop variations quickly. |
The studio has been explicit that the procedural workflow is not generative AI. Unreal's PCG framework scatters and composes assets that the team's artists handcraft; every asset in the game is built by the team rather than generated. The studio has described its debut title as handcrafted, while noting it uses ordinary software tools for tasks like performance testing and optimization.
External Collaborations
For the combat system in Chronicles: Medieval, Raw Power Games partnered with Björn Rüther, a recognized expert in Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA). His involvement shaped the design of weapon handling, guard systems, parrying mechanics, and the overall authenticity of melee combat in the game. The announcement trailer for Chronicles: Medieval was narrated by actor Tom Hardy and featured music composed by Adam Skorupa, the composer behind much of The Witcher series soundtrack.
Community and Development Approach
Raw Power Games has committed to transparent development during the Early Access period, including published developer diaries, community polls to help prioritize features, and dedicated playtest opportunities. The studio has also committed to building comprehensive modding tools and working with experienced modders from early in the process.
