Ghosts are the game's hint system, and they are the reason Castlevania: Belmont's Curse ships without waypoints or guide arrows. Spirits are hidden in every new area of Paris, usually tucked into places that take a platforming detour to reach, and talking to one produces a clue.
They are not enemies. Nothing about them is hostile, and finding one is a reward for looking rather than a fight.
What Clues Contain
A clue can carry any of four things:
Where a boss is.
What to expect from that boss before walking into the arena.
How to counter a specific attack.
An alternate route through an area.
The delivery is narrative rather than instructional. Ghosts tell morbid short stories that imply where to go instead of naming a destination. One spirit relates a tragic story about seeing someone dragged under the roots of a cursed tree, which is the route into the area beneath the cemetery where Medusa waits.
Documented clue | What it resolves |
|---|---|
Look away when Medusa is about to meet your gaze | The counter to her petrifying gaze, which is to turn Rose's back rather than dodge |
A shortcut back toward the second boss | Faster retries on a fight players are likely to lose more than once |
A story about someone dragged under the roots of a cursed tree | The entrance to the third boss area |
Storage
Clues do not disappear once heard. They are filed into the menu alongside the tarot deck and can be scrolled through again later, which matters because a clue found early may only become useful several areas on. That deck is the same one holding the Arcana Rose takes from bosses.
Entirely Optional
Nothing forces a player to find a single ghost. Clues are skippable with no penalty, and a player can reach a boss and beat it having found none of them. In the preview build four clues existed for the third boss, and it was possible to fight that boss with three of them found.
Because the clues are optional, the level design carries a second layer of direction on its own. The route to the third boss is signalled by scenery, and each district's colour palette works as a landmark; both are covered on Exploration and Map Structure.
Not the Same as Boss Companions
Ghosts are separate from the bosses Rose absorbs. Sealed bosses also talk to her, but they are individual characters with agendas of their own rather than a hint system, and their conversations arrive automatically rather than being found. See Bosses for that layer.
