Castlevania: Belmont's Curse has adjustable difficulty settings, and the published information about them is incomplete. This page records exactly what has been confirmed and marks the edges, because the full option list has not been released and should not be inferred from a partial one.
Base Difficulty
The game as it plays without adjustment is deliberately demanding. Bosses punish mistakes hard, and encounters are built around learning attack patterns and using the invincibility frames on the dodge rather than absorbing hits. That difficulty is the design rather than an oversight, and it is the headline impression from every account of the three-hour build.
It is not paired with a harsh failure state. Dying costs nothing beyond returning to the nearest checkpoint and fighting the respawned enemies again. Checkpoints are generously spaced and refill the healing flasks; see Combat and Controls. There is no permadeath.
Confirmed Modifiers
Modifier | Effect |
|---|---|
Damage dealt | Adjustable. |
Damage taken | Adjustable. |
Automatic respawns outside boss doors | Returns the player directly outside a boss arena rather than further back. |
Further options | Stated to exist and not enumerated. Konami has not published the full list. |
These are modifiers, not difficulty levels. No easy, normal or hard selector has been described in any published material, and the two things are different: granular sliders can exist without a preset selector, and reports of both are consistent with each other.
At the July 2026 preview event the modifiers were switched off by default and a member of the development team had to authorise their use, which is a detail about how the event was run rather than about how the shipped options behave.
Design Framing
Konami has framed the adjustable settings around fairness rather than around lowering the challenge, which fits the rest of the design: telegraphed boss attacks, cheap deaths, and generously placed checkpoints all point at a game that wants players to keep trying rather than to give up or to coast.
What Has Not Been Published
The complete option list, the ranges each modifier covers, whether settings can be changed mid-run, and whether any of them affect achievements are all unknown. Nothing here should be read as the finished feature set. Stat growth as an alternative route through a hard fight is covered on Progression and Upgrades.
