Zeverland takes place on one continuous wasteland that survivors cross on foot and by vehicle. The studio describes the terrain as a mix of mountains, lakes, desolate towns and abandoned farms. Because the game opens in the first minutes of the collapse rather than years afterwards, the landscape is still recognisably modern: fuel still sits in station tanks, houses still have furniture in them, and the roads are still driveable. The catastrophe that sets all of this in motion is the Red Rain.
Map Size

Three different map figures have been published and they describe three different things. Keeping them apart matters, because two of them agree and one of them belongs to a build that no longer exists.
Figure | What it applies to | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
576 km2, procedurally generated, with random spawn points | The first test build only. That build was wiped when the test ended. | Studio FAQ, 2025-11-01. See First Pre-Alpha Tech Test. |
5000 km2 of seamless wasteland | The current marketing description of the game | Steam store page, read 2026-09-15 |
Roughly 72 by 72 km on official servers, 8 by 8 km on private servers | The server tiers as described in 2026 | Statement the studio made at gamescom 2026. See Servers and Multiplayer. |
The second and third figures agree with each other. A square 72 km on a side works out at about 5,184 km2, which is what the store page rounds off to 5000 km2. The 576 km2 map was specific to the first tech test. Smaller figures that circulate elsewhere match no first-party statement and should not be used. The July 2026 Roadmap lists larger maps with richer points of interest as a refinement target, so even the current numbers are better read as a direction than as a final size.
Cities and Points of Interest
Oakley is the only city area named anywhere in first-party communication. A player praised it in the developer question and answer session of 2026-07-01 and the studio replied by committing to bigger and more numerous cities. No other settlement has been named. City areas carry far more zombies than the countryside does, which is covered on Zombies and Infection.
Points of interest are not only landmarks, they are property. Every point of interest could be claimed in the second test build, and that is the stated reason the studio kept free demolition of already claimed buildings closed off: without the restriction, players could have taken high value locations cheaply. On 2026-08-03 the studio announced a change for official servers, where key locations such as gas stations and quest points can no longer be claimed as private territory. The claiming rules themselves are covered on Territory and Claims.
Larger points of interest are in design rather than in the game. As of 2026-08-03 a military base was described as under consideration and more types of large location were said to be in design. Neither has been shown. Loot pressure is part of the reason they are wanted: in the second test, gas stations ran dry and city loot refreshed slowly, and the studio's stated fix was a bigger map. That side of the world is covered on Looting and Scavenging.
Random Events and Encounters
More than ten types of accident are placed across the map, described by the studio on 2026-01-21. The encounter the studio singled out is the distress signal: approaching one may turn up an ally or a raider, so answering it is a gamble rather than a reward. Survivors met in the wild can sometimes be recruited, which is covered on NPC Companions.
Environmental Storytelling
Hidden notes are scattered across the map and tell stories about the people who lived there before the catastrophe. They were present in the first test build. More broadly, the studio said in November 2025 that the story is delivered through environmental storytelling, diary pages and radio messages, and that those sources build toward the truth behind the Red Rain, the source of the virus and possible escape routes for humanity. There is no single ending, but there is a clear direction, and player choices shape the world. A separate layer of published in-world fiction, none of it confirmed in a build, is collected on Story and Lore Teasers.
Story Content in the Second Test
The Second Pre-Alpha Tech Test shipped a main story scoped to the length of the test. Two main story quests are named in its bug lists, Disaster Relief and Potential Threat, and the story ran to a point called The Rebuilders. When a player asked whether the main story was short and simply ended at The Rebuilders, the studio confirmed that the content for that test was scoped to the test itself. Nothing else about The Rebuilders has been published. It has never been described as a group, a place or a faction.
The same test exposed a map design problem the studio acknowledged on 2026-06-30: the first quest sat beyond an infected zone, and players died repeatedly trying to reach it without the right protection. The zones themselves are covered on Infected Zones.
