Factions exist in Zeverland. As of 2026-09-15 that sentence, plus a handful of consequences, is close to the whole of the published record. No faction has ever been named by the studio, no joining process has been described, and nothing has been said about what belonging to one changes for a survivor day to day. This page documents what is known and is deliberately short.
What Is Confirmed
Players belong to factions, and players of different factions can fight each other. Their NPC Companions will do the same: the studio listed cross-faction fighting between NPCs on the second test's bug board under working as intended, in June 2026. That is a confirmation of design intent rather than a description of a system. It tells you factions are a real affiliation with real consequences in combat, and it stops there.
The only other confirmed consequence is indirect. Because factions divide players, they interact with the protection rules the studio has been building, which are covered on PvE and PvP.
Announced, Not Built
Three announcements touch factions. All of them are statements of direction. None has been shown in a playable build.
Announcement | What was said | Date |
|---|---|---|
Faction-based lifeline for infected zones | A faction route to extending the time a survivor can spend inside an infected zone beyond the respirator limit. See Infected Zones. | 2026-06-28 |
Expanded faction storyline | Listed among the systems the studio said it was focusing on refining. See Roadmap. | July 2026 |
PVP set aside, protection strengthened | The studio said it would focus on the cooperative experience and set PVP-related content aside for now, improving base and offline protection in the next test. | 2026-08-03 |
No Faction Has Been Named
This is worth stating plainly because the gap invites guesswork. As of 2026-09-15 no first-party source names a single Zeverland faction. The Rebuilders, the point at which the second test's main story ended, is sometimes read as a faction name. The studio has never described it as one. The entire record on it is a player asking whether the main story simply ended at The Rebuilders and the studio answering that the content for that test was scoped to the test itself. It is a story beat with a proper noun attached, and nothing more has been published. That test is covered on Second Pre-Alpha Tech Test, and the story content it carried is covered on World and Map.
Open Questions
The following are unanswered rather than undocumented. No first-party statement addresses any of them:
Whether faction choice happens at character creation, through play, or not at all
Whether factions are player organisations, NPC powers, or both
Whether a shelter or a territory claim is tied to a faction
Whether reputation, ranks or a faction currency exist
What the announced faction lifeline for infected zones would actually require of a player
Factions and the Cooperative Turn
There is a tension in the record that has not been resolved. Cross-faction fighting between players and between their NPCs was confirmed as working as intended in June 2026. Six weeks later, on 2026-08-03, the studio said it would focus on nailing the cooperative experience and set aside PVP-related content for now. It did not say what that decision means for faction versus faction combat. Until it does, the safe reading is that faction hostility exists in the design but that its future shape is undecided. Server structure, which the same August statement also covered, is on Servers and Multiplayer.
