Playing as a Zombie

Initial version (2026-09-15)
Playing as a zombie is a documented Zeverland feature rather than a rumour, but almost everything written about it in the community is not. This page covers what the studio has actually stated, and then, separately and clearly labelled, the much larger pile of ideas that players proposed and the studio only said it liked.
Only death by infection turns your survivor into a zombie. Death by wolves, or being bitten to death by Zeds, counts as an ordinary death and sends you through the normal respawn instead. The rules around infection are covered on Zombies and Infection.
Turning is also optional. When the state is offered, you may instead choose to die and respawn as a human. That makes it a decision the player takes rather than a punishment the game applies.
A zombified survivor can return to being human. The studio's stated reason, given in November 2025, is that the infection is not yet strong enough to make the change permanent. That single sentence is also the clearest hint available about where the infection is meant to go later, and it should not be read as more than a hint.
The state is a real handicap rather than a power fantasy. Your limbs are too stiff to open a can, so you cannot eat or drink normally while zombified. That cuts you off from most of Survival Needs and from Cooking for the duration.
In the First Pre-Alpha Tech Test the zombie state lasted about fifteen minutes. Players said that was too short to do anything meaningful with. That duration belongs to a pre-alpha build that was wiped, so it is a record of what was tested, not a current value.
On 2026-08-03 the studio addressed the feature directly and said it is not removing humans turning into zombies. The stated sequencing is to make the human survival loop rock solid first, and then build out the zombie side as a complete system of its own. As of 2026-09-15 no date has been given for that work, and no next playtest date has been announced either. The wider schedule is covered on Development History.
Most Zeverland developer communication takes the form of a player asking for something and the studio replying warmly. That format has produced an unusually large body of zombie ideas that circulate as though they were announced. None of the following has been announced, shown, or listed on the [[Roadmap]]. Each one is a player proposal that the studio responded to with interest and logged.
Zombie Kings, or any ability to command a horde as a zombie
Zombie talent trees or a separate zombie progression track
Evolving into named special infected archetypes
Eight-armed or eight-legged zombie builds
Zombie-only areas of the map sealed behind heavy gates
A feeding meter that would replace the timer on the zombie state
Hopping from one host body to another
A half-zombie hero questline
Purifying the sources of infection
Crops contaminated by the infection
They are recorded here only because they circulate widely and are easy to mistake for a roadmap. The accurate summary is that the studio has logged community interest in a deeper zombie side, has said it is not cutting the feature, and has not described what the deeper version would contain. The only infected variants the studio has named itself are covered on Special Infected.
