Tar is collected by chopping Tarwood Trees, a distinct tree type that grows in the Cursed Swamps. The trees stand out from the sickly plague-corrupted growth nearby and drop Tar directly rather than a raw log that needs further processing.
Because Tar is an Item Level 3 resource that feeds the endgame Tarred Planks and Tarred Fabric recipes, most players only start dedicated Tar runs once they can survive the Cursed Swamps, which puts it firmly in the mid-to-late crafting tier alongside Plague Wood and Hewn Stone.
