Planning Ahead is a talent in the Marksman branch of the Windrose Talent System. Speeds up the Passive Reload bar that ticks while doing anything except firing (including melee combat). Enables the Passive Reload + melee rotation that defines hybrid Fencer and Marksman play.

Planning Ahead is an early pick in the Marksman branch of the Talent System. Marksman groups the firearm perks, so any build that fires a gun benefits from it, but its real value shows on hybrid characters who swing a one-handed melee weapon and keep an off-hand gun reloading passively. Since Windrose allows a free respec, it is cheap to slot in for ranged-heavy regions and refund later.
The Passive Reload bar applies to every firearm, so Planning Ahead speeds the reload of all of them. The faster the base cycle, the more raw shots the bonus adds over a fight.
Firearm | Governing Stat | Role |
|---|---|---|
Fast off-hand shots, ideal for the hybrid rotation | ||
Slow, high-damage shots that gain the most per reload | ||
Close-range spread, reloaded between melee swings |
Mandatory for every Marksman build. Also commonly taken on Fencer builds running a Passive-reload off-hand pistol.

Stats and Talents stat allocation and respec
Planning Ahead is the engine behind hybrid Fencer-Marksman rotations. The Passive Reload bar ticks up while the character does melee or any other non-firing action, so faster ticks directly increase ranged uptime in melee pressure windows.
A Pistol with a 4-second Passive Reload cycle at rank 0 becomes a 3-second cycle at rank 3 Planning Ahead (+25%). In a 12-second Fencer melee window, the character gets 4 Passive Reloads instead of 3, which is a full extra pistol shot worth of off-hand pressure.
Active Reload is separate; use Quick Hand if the build prioritizes manual reloading between shots.
Stacks with Disciplined Fencer or Evasive Fencer, which refill Passive Reload progress on Perfect Block or Perfect Dash.
Planning Ahead only changes reload speed, not damage, so it pairs with whatever stat your gun uses for damage: Precision for the Pistol and Musket, Agility for the Blunderbuss. More ranged uptime simply means more chances for those stats to land hits and, with Mastery, more chances to crit.
Because respec is free, a common pattern is to keep Planning Ahead slotted for ranged-heavy regions and swap it for Quick Hand or a melee perk when a build leans on manual Active Reload between shots instead.
