11Before its early access launch, WARDOGS was put in front of players through a staged programme of invite-only tests rather than one open public beta. Access ran through the game’s own community site, where players registered with a Steam or Discord account, and through a playtest entry attached to the game’s store page. The developers described the number of slots as extremely limited and said they were deliberately not running a typical marketing beta: they wanted testers who would file feedback and bug reports.223344How Testing Scaled5566Testing grew in stages across 2026, from a handful of invited players to a weekend-long alpha open to a far larger pool.7788StageDateDetailAnnouncementFebruary 2026At reveal the studio said playtests were not in the immediate future, with a long road to early access still ahead.Pre-alphaBy June 2026An invite-only pre-alpha had been running with a small selection of players for several months. The developers said testers kept coming back.Pre-alpha expansion7 June 2026Access opened to a further 1,000 new players.Playtest listing3 July 2026A separate playtest entry went live on the storefront, adding a request-access panel to the game's store page.First livestream23 July 2026The developers streamed publicly for the first time alongside real playtesters, starting at 18:00 UTC and running about an hour and fifty minutes.Closed alpha7 to 9 August 2026The largest test at that point, with tens of thousands of players invited.Closed beta21 to 23 August 2026Servers live from 17:00 UTC Friday to 02:00 UTC Monday. Pre-orders carried a guaranteed invite, with a slower trickle drawn from the sign-up pool.Closed beta 023 to 5 September 2026A scale test run straight after the FPS Games Show, with invites released in waves rather than all at once.Open beta5 to 6 September 2026The second beta was opened to everyone on the Saturday and ran until 08:00 UTC on Sunday 6 September.Early access launch10 September 2026The testing programme ended with the public release. Servers opened at 16:00 UTC.99The Closed Alpha10101111Announced on 23 July 2026, the closed alpha ran across the first weekend of August, from the 7th to the 9th. The studio called it its biggest playtest yet and said tens of thousands of players were invited, a sharp step up from the pre-alpha's invite waves. Access was tied to wishlisting the game on the storefront and watching the developers' own stream, and further invites went out in the days beforehand, including a batch of 750 on 5 August.12121313Testers could log in between 17:00 UTC on the Friday and 02:00 UTC on the Monday. Servers stayed live for the whole of that window across eight regions, so the alpha ran continuously through the weekend rather than in short scheduled sessions.14141515What the Tests Feed Back16161717The studio treats testing as its main feedback channel rather than a marketing beat. It has said it gathers feedback through the storefront, its social channels, and the playtests themselves, watches gameplay data to inform balance and cash economy changes, and plans seasonal updates that respond to how players actually behave. Performance has been shaped the same way: the team says it has optimised the game across a wide range of hardware alongside the published system requirements, and that testers consistently remark on how well it already runs.18181919Feedback from these tests has also changed public design positions. The debate over the kill camera, which produced the studio's stated line between arcade feel and simulation, came directly out of reactions to the gameplay reveal and the testing that followed.20202121Testing continued past the closed alpha. The developers have said the early access period will run for roughly one to two years and that community involvement is central to how the game is built, so the feedback loop carried on past the end of the invite-only programme and into early access.22222323The Closed Beta24242525A closed beta weekend ran from 21 to 23 August 2026, shortly before the early access launch. Servers were live from 17:00 UTC on the Friday through to 02:00 UTC on the Monday, putting the large-scale matches, the servers, and the core systems under load with a bigger crowd than the alpha had carried.26262727Access worked differently from every earlier round. The studio said it had reached the ceiling on how many keys it could hand out externally, so the sign-up route that had fed the alpha could no longer grant entry. A small number of players were drawn at random through the storefront playtest sign-up instead, while anyone who pre-ordered the game got a guaranteed invite. The developers explained the pre-order route as a way to keep numbers predictable, since a fully open beta would have made launch-day server planning much harder, and they repeated that players who tried the beta and decided the game was not for them were welcome to refund.28282929The closed alpha itself ended on 10 August 2026 and the studio called the response overwhelmingly positive. The testing agreement covering it was lifted the following day, so footage recorded during that weekend could be published, though separate invite-only tests remained under their own terms.30303131The studio lifted the testing agreement before the beta weekend began, so players were free to capture and stream their matches, and a pre-load of the playtest build went live on 20 August. Invites from the sign-up pool were then released gradually across the weekend rather than all at once, which the developers explained as a way to watch server scaling and stability behave before the early access launch. The beta closed on 24 August. The studio's written recap described the turnout in general terms rather than giving a figure.32323333The Second Beta and the Open Weekend34343535A second closed beta was announced on 1 September 2026 and scheduled to begin immediately after the FPS Games Show on 3 September. The studio framed it plainly as a scale test: it wanted players to jump in and break systems that only fail under load, and it named the parts of the service under observation, including server scaling and the server browser, stream reward drops, content entitlements tied to the Supporter Edition, voice chat, and the login queue. Those systems are described under Servers and Anti-Cheat.36363737Access again ran through pre-orders for a guaranteed invite, with a smaller pool drawn from the storefront playtest sign-up and released in waves. The developers explained the choice the same way they had in August: validating stability properly meant raising the player count in controlled steps rather than opening the gates at once.38383939That changed on the evening of 5 September. With the weekend nearly over, the studio removed the invite requirement entirely and turned the second closed beta into an open beta, inviting players to come and break the servers. The open weekend ran until 08:00 UTC on Sunday 6 September, four days before the early access launch, and was the first time the game was playable without an invite of any kind.40404141How the Programme Ended42424343The last round ran on the weekend before release. When the game launched the studio published figures for the two largest tests: nearly half a million unique players took part in the August closed beta, and the final pre-launch test peaked at 245,118 concurrent players on the storefront. That final weekend had been framed from the start as a scale test rather than a preview.44444545The programme closed with the release itself. By 11 September 2026 the request-access panel that had sat on the game’s store page was gone, and the separate playtest entry on the storefront, while still listed, no longer offered a route in. Feedback now runs through the live game instead. The release is covered under Early Access Launch, and the changes that came out of the final rounds of testing are visible in the notes published at launch, collected under Update History.
