11 William Dowsett is the protagonist and sole playable character of Valor Mortis. He begins the story as a soldier of Napoleon Bonaparte's Grande Armée, one of countless men caught up in an endless war that has spread across an alternate-history 19th-century Europe. William falls in that conflict, but death is not the end of his journey. He is resurrected and returns changed, carrying a power tied to the supernatural plague that has corrupted the land.

He is a young British man, drawn in by Napoleon's promise of liberating the continent from draconic monarchies, who left his homeland to enlist in the Grande Armee and met a swift end in the conquest on the eastern front. That makes him a volunteer in a foreign army rather than a conscript in his own, which is the detail that gives his later crisis of conscience its weight: he chose this side.

His resurrection frames him as a figure caught between the living and the plague-touched, neither fully one nor the other.

1818 In gameplay terms William's command of the plague expresses itself across two systems. The first is Transmutations, the off-hand corruption powers used alongside a melee weapon. The second is the supernatural mobility on display in his Traversal toolkit, where the same plague-channelled power lets him grapple through the air and run along walls. The traversal kit is described in trailers as nephtoglobin-powered, which ties the way he moves through the world directly to the same corruption that fuels his combat abilities.

2222 Once resurrected William is guided through this strange afterlife by Napoleon Bonaparte's own disembodied voice, voiced by the actor Vincent Cassel. In August 2026 the studio put a purpose behind that voice for the first time. The plague in William's veins corrupts his body but grants him a dangerous power, and he "now hears the voice of Emperor Bonaparte in his mind, guiding him to usurp The Shrike's resistance of the commonfolk". That reframes the emperor's guidance as an instruction rather than company, and it sets William against a human resistance as well as against the plague. The relationship between William and Napoleon, and what the emperor wants from his returned soldier, is one of the central threads being teased in marketing material and is set up to be a major dramatic question over the course of the game.

2626 In September 2026 the studio framed the Story Trailer around a set of questions it says the game answers, and the first of them is about William himself: why can he not remember his past. That is the first first-party indication that his memory is damaged rather than intact, and it sits alongside two others the studio posed, what the beast in the sandy desert is, and who among the survivors is a friend and who is a foe.
