Initial General Lothaire page covering the Eagle-Bearer boss seen in Gamescom 2025 and the pre-alpha playtest (2026-05-28)
General Lothaire, the Eagle-Bearer, is the first major boss demonstrated for Valor Mortis. He has anchored the public face of the game since the Gamescom 2025 reveal and has been the closing fight of every hands-on demo to date, including the global pre-alpha playtest in October 2025.
Lothaire is a senior figure within the corrupted Grande Armee that the supernatural plague has remade into the Eternal Guard. His title, the Eagle-Bearer, ties him to the standards that real Napoleonic armies carried into battle and is reused here as a marker of his rank inside the corrupted hierarchy. He stands as the first true test of William's resurrected combat kit and serves as the demo arc's narrative endpoint.
Hands-on coverage of the Gamescom and playtest fights described a multi-phase encounter with several reliable moves to recognize. Lothaire throws corpses across the arena as a long-range pressure move, slams the ground to clear space around him, and exposes growths on his body that can be detonated by off-hand pistol shots to weaken him for follow-up melee. The fight rewards moving between ranges rather than committing fully to either, and uses the full Combat kit of parries, dashes, and finishers.
The most consistent way players have approached the fight in the available footage is to stay close enough to punish telegraphed melee attacks but ready to dash out and answer the corpse-throw or ground slam from the edge of the arena. The pistol shots on the visible growths are the heaviest single source of damage, so saving ammunition for those windows pays off more than emptying it into regular swings. Healing flasks are limited, so trading hits to skip a phase rarely works as well as patience does.
Lothaire has only been playable in pre-alpha demo builds, including the October 2025 global playtest. His exact health values, ammunition costs, and the specific timing on each attack are likely to be tuned before launch, so treat the strategies above as a starting point rather than a final guide. The Weapons and Transmutations pages cover the tools available to face him as they evolve through the pre-launch cycle.
As the first named boss in the public demos, Lothaire fits the role of the showcase enemy that introduces players to the corrupted Grande Armee. He sits alongside other named figures such as Sergeant Gaspard "Cannonhand" Dubois, introduced in the Crimson Plague trailer, and The Orphan, introduced in the Triple-i Initiative trailer. Together they sketch out the scale of the threat William is being asked to push back against. The wider faction context lives on the Setting and Story page.
