Eras

Initial version (2026-10-20)
Tropico 7 is divided into four historical eras that a nation progresses through. The official FAQ lists "4 eras to progress through" among the game's headline numbers, and the store text describes guiding citizens "through the ages toward untold prosperity". Official posts refer to four periods by name, Colonial Times, World Wars, Cold War and Modern Times, which match the FAQ's count of four eras. The game is unreleased (due January 28, 2027), and Kalypso Media has shared only a handful of era-specific details so far.
The table lists the eras in historical order with every era-specific detail that official material had confirmed as of October 2026.
Era | Confirmed details | Closed beta (spring 2026) |
|---|---|---|
Colonial Times | No era-specific mechanics announced yet; the Campaign premise starts with El Presidente as a colonial governor | Campaign part tested |
World Wars | From this era onwards, individual sections of the constitution can be amended once per legislative term (see Constitution and Edicts) | Campaign part tested |
Cold War | No era-specific mechanics announced yet | Scenario mission tested |
Modern Times | Features six superpowers: the USA, the EU, China, Saudi Arabia, India and Brazil (see Superpowers and Foreign Affairs) | Scenario mission tested |
The story trailer released on October 9, 2026 describes El Presidente's rise from "a humble colonial governor serving the British Crown to the ruler of his own island". As of October 2026, Kalypso has not stated which campaign map or mission belongs to which era, so the Colonial Times note above reflects the trailer's premise rather than a confirmed mission list.
Tropico 7 has eight factions in total, but not all of them are active at once. According to the official FAQ, "Depending on the era, 2 to 6 distinct factions are represented at the same time." The second part of the first dev log describes the same rule, saying the number of factions depends on the era. As of October 2026, Kalypso has not said how many factions appear in each specific era or which ones they are. See Factions and the Council for the factions confirmed so far.
The first dev log ties one political rule directly to an era: from the World Wars era onwards, players can amend individual sections of their constitution once per legislative term, meaning between elections. Each amendment can shift El Presidente's position on the Political Matrix, which in turn affects which edicts are available.
Superpowers are confirmed for the Modern Times era, where six of them appear. The FAQ speaks of "Up to 6 Superpowers, from the USA to China", which leaves room for fewer superpowers in earlier eras, but as of October 2026 Kalypso has not said which superpowers, if any, appear before Modern Times.
The FAQ lists "100+ research options" among the game's numbers. As of October 2026, Kalypso has not published the contents of the research options or said how they relate to era progression.
The closed beta, which was scheduled for two weeks from March 31, 2026 on Steam and Xbox PC, covered all four eras: two campaign parts from the Colonial Times and the World Wars, and two scenario missions in the Cold War and Modern Times. See Scenarios and Sandbox Maps for more on scenario missions.
As of October 2026, Kalypso had not announced:
How a game moves from one era to the next.
Which buildings, edicts or research options are limited to particular eras.
Which factions and superpowers appear in each era other than Modern Times.
