Creatures and Enemies

Added leopards, crocodiles, pack berserk behaviour and the three mercenary roles serving Natla; rewrote the Focus Mode description in the studio’s own terms
Combat in Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis has been rebuilt from scratch, and so has the roster that Lara Croft faces. Official material groups her opposition into three broad classes: savage wildlife, human mercenaries, and mythological creatures. Only the wildlife of Peru has been detailed so far.
The design brief was authenticity over fighting-game systems. The experience director has said the team wanted encounters to feel less like trading moves and more like surviving against living, unpredictable predators, and the animals have been given dens, water sources and scattered bones so they read as long-term residents rather than spawned obstacles.

Five creatures return in the opening region, each redesigned and each teaching a different combat lesson. The wolf, bear and bat were modelled on prehistoric animals from the Andes.
Creature | Role in combat | What has been confirmed |
|---|---|---|
Wolves | First real threat | They move constantly, so Focus Mode is the practical way to take them down quickly. The collapsing bridge ambush from the original returns in reimagined form. |
Bats | Ranged-combat tutorial | Described as moving, squishy targets, deliberately placed to get players comfortable shooting in third person before the serious threats arrive. They fill the caverns of Peru. |
Bears | Movement test | Cannot be traded with. Players are expected to break away using short acrobatic chains, then use Focus Mode for a headshot on the charging animal. |
Velociraptors | Pack predator | Effective alone and in packs. Their attacks telegraph so they can be dodged, but a leaping attack can pin Lara. They are feathered, and damage decals knock feathers loose during a fight. |
Tyrannosaurus rex | Set-piece encounter | The climax the whole Peru region builds toward. Shooting alone will not work; Lara has to outwit it. Redesigned with red feathers. |
Pack behaviour | Shared by wolves and velociraptors | In groups they circle Lara rather than charging one at a time. The last survivor of a pack enters a berserk state and becomes more aggressive and less predictable. |
The T-Rex encounter has been reworked more than anything else in the region. The team began with an arena fight in the shape of the original, then abandoned it once the idea of a chase took hold. The game director describes the result as blockbuster and spectacle-driven, a cinematic set piece rather than a conventional boss arena, with the animal maintaining a presence across the whole level rather than appearing only at the end.
The art director has framed the redesign as respectful of the original silhouette with the red feathers as the new element, and the combat as an expansion of what was previously a simple shoot-and-run exchange.
A later combat breakdown named two more animals without tying either to a named region. Both are built around a specific way of killing Lara rather than a straight fight.
Creature | What has been confirmed |
|---|---|
Leopards | Use hidey-holes in the environment to attack from unexpected angles. |
Crocodiles | Can drag Lara into the water and drown her. |
Neither has been placed in Peru, Greece, Egypt or the Mediterranean island in official material, so their region is still open.
The human enemies have now been identified. They are Natla’s mercenaries, which is the first confirmed link between the human opposition and the antagonist carried over from the original storyline. They fight in three roles.
Role | Behaviour |
|---|---|
Assault rifle | Pins Lara down with sustained fire. |
Shotgun | Closes the distance to force a short-range fight. |
Sniper | Stays at range and lines up headshots. |
Mercenaries also introduce cover to the game, which the wildlife encounters do not use. Their numbers, their motivation, and how far up the faction the player ever sees have not been published.
Focus Mode is the system that ties these encounters together. The studio calls it the key that unlocks Lara’s acrobatics in combat: dealing and taking damage fill a meter, and spending it triggers an acrobatic move that lets her keep firing as she moves. Acrobatics feed the meter in turn, and dodging an attack rewards more focus than dodging nothing. The game director calls it the currency of combat, and the mechanism that makes her classic acrobatics viable rather than a liability, since a slow evasive move would otherwise leave her exposed. She fights with her dual pistols alongside other unlockable weapons.
The wildlife of Greece, Egypt and the Mediterranean island has not been shown. The mercenaries are now confirmed as Natla’s, but the faction’s motivation and its relationship to the Scion. The phrase "mythological creatures" appears in official copy without any named example. The full unlockable weapon roster is also unpublished.
The 1996 original's enemy roster is not a guide to this one. Combat was rebuilt from the ground up, and the studios have named only the creatures above as confirmed returns.
