Stromford is a remote village in the far north of Kovir, featured in The Witcher IV's cinematic reveal trailer shown at The Game Awards in December 2024. It is one of the first locations shown in the game.
Ciri arrives at Stromford to find a community terrorized by a creature called the Bauk. The villagers have resorted to ritual human sacrifice to keep the monster at bay, selecting victims by drawing lots. When Ciri arrives, the latest victim, a young woman, is about to be offered.
Ciri takes a witcher contract to slay the Bauk, tracking it into a cave system beneath or near the village. After a fight in which she uses her chain weapon, Igni, and elemental water-to-electricity magic, she kills the creature. But when she returns to the village, she discovers the villagers have already killed the sacrificial girl themselves, blaming Ciri for provoking the monster by interfering.
The scene demonstrates the moral ambiguity that defines the Witcher series. Ciri completed her contract and saved the village from the monster, but the villagers' fear and superstition led them to commit murder anyway. There is no clean victory.
Stromford appears isolated, set among snowy hills and sparse vegetation. The architecture suggests a poor, subsistence-level community far from Kovir's wealthy urban centers. The cave system where the Bauk resides is nearby, reinforcing the village's vulnerability to monster attacks.
