Swords of Legends is the newest installment in the Gujian series, a line of single-player Chinese fantasy role-playing games made by Aurogon Shanghai. The series began in 2010 and has run for over a decade, building a reputation in Chinese-speaking regions for story-driven adventures steeped in myth.
Every entry in the series tells its own complete, standalone story, so no prior experience is needed to start with Swords of Legends. The studio's earlier Gujian games are background and context only. Their characters, mechanics, and plots are separate, and details from those titles should not be assumed to carry over into this one.
What sets this entry apart is its reach. It is positioned as the first global launch in the franchise, bringing the series to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S worldwide instead of releasing primarily within China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong as earlier entries did.
By the studio's own account the franchise has a 15-year history in China and has sold more than six million copies to date, which makes it one of the cornerstones of the Chinese single-player RPG scene. The studio also cites a China Copyright Gold Award for the series, and describes itself as having spent nearly two decades on Chinese fantasy role-playing games. That track record is the foundation the developers are building this first worldwide release on, carrying the series' storytelling and art into a self-contained new adventure.

Beyond the three mainline games, the series has expanded into companion books and a feature film. Swords of Legends continues that lineage as its newest chapter, while still telling a complete story of its own. In Chinese-speaking regions the series is known as 古剑奇谭 (Gujian Qitan), and this newest entry is titled 古剑 (Gujian).
The studio has called Swords of Legends the fourth single-player title in the series. Alongside the three mainline games there is a separate massively multiplayer title released in the West under a very similar name, which is a different game and is not covered on this wiki. The two share a developer and a setting tradition, but Swords of Legends is a single-player, buy-once release with its own cast and a self-contained story.
Series continuity is handled the same way it always has been. Each entry tells a complete story, so nothing from the earlier games is required reading, and mechanics or characters from them should not be assumed to appear here. One system is a stated exception: a character-growth mechanic written 星蕴 in Chinese, familiar to players of the earlier games, has been confirmed by the team as retained and deepened in this entry.
For how this entry stands on its own, see the Swords of Legends overview, and for its production history see Development.
