Ox-Head

Created page: the officially revealed first companion, his personality and kit, the linked-attack trigger, and the hidden enraged rematch that closes the playtest build
Ox-Head is the first Spirit Companion revealed for Swords of Legends, and the only one the studio has named. Official English material introduces him simply as the Ox, a spectral, horned fellow traveler of the netherworld, and shows his abilities as the worked example of what a companion does.
He is unusual in filling three roles inside a single build. In the July 2026 hands-on he served as the tutorial boss, then as a permanent summonable ally for the rest of the run, and finally as the hidden fifth encounter unlocked only after every other slice was cleared.
The character is drawn from Ox-Head and Horse-Face, the paired gate-guardians who escort the dead in Chinese underworld tradition. Both figures have been described as accompanying the hero as colleagues rather than as adversaries, which fits a protagonist who is himself an officer of that realm, though only the Ox has actually been shown in play so far.
The studio treats his personality as part of the design rather than as flavour text. He is written as honest and straightforward with a strong talkative streak, addresses the hero as boss throughout the adventure, and keeps up a running commentary while travelling. That chatter stops when a fight turns serious: the team has described him going silent and flushing red across his whole body once he is genuinely angry, which is also the visual tell for his enraged state as an opponent.
Beating him in the tutorial converts him into a summonable ally, which makes that fight a demonstration of the soul-capture loop rather than a scripted set piece. The wider system is covered under the Spirit Companion System.
Role | Detail |
|---|---|
Damage interception | He physically steps in front of the hero to take blades and spears meant for the player. |
Linked attacks | Emptying an opponent's poise gauge opens a window for a linked execution performed by the hero and the Ox together. |
Assist skill | Beyond the persistent summon, companions carry their own assist skills that the player triggers deliberately rather than waiting on. |
Fighting identity | His own contribution leans on blocking and on large, heavy blows. |
Clearing the tutorial and then Kong Kong Zi, Wu Yang and Tri Tail unlocked a fifth, hidden encounter against a serious Ox-Head. The rematch is a different proposition from the tutorial: he is thick-skinned, presses the attack almost continuously, and fights with an iron hammer that he sometimes swings on its haft like a flail to sweep a wide arc. Once roughly a third of his health is gone he abandons restraint entirely and enters an enraged mode.
It is the hardest fight in the build by some distance. At least one player at the media session failed to finish it before the session clock ran out.
The companion tab in the main menu was locked for the entire hands-on, so the roster, the recruitment rules and any progression attached to companions all remain unseen. The project lead declined to say which of the demo's characters end up recruitable, saying only that the clues were already there for players to work out. No companion beyond the Ox has been named.
His role in a fight sits alongside the tools described under Combat and Divine Artifacts, and the build he appeared in is covered under 2026 Offline Playtest.
