The Periscopic Clowncrab is a small, passive crab in Subnautica 2 that shelters among stinging anemones and mimics them with its enormous eye stalks. Its databank entry records the generated name Ostrakonskelos periskopion, the hard-legged periscope. Naturally curious, it does not flee when approached, and will often simply stare at a diver, which makes it one of the easiest creatures to scan.

Appearance and Variant

The Clowncrab's eye stalks mimic the surrounding anemones, and at night their tips glow white while keeping a black iris. A cosmetic variant lives in other anemone fields, reported with darker blue coloring in the Necrolei Hills and a green tint among the green anemones of Anemone Hills. The variant is visual only: it shares the standard databank entry, and scanning one counts as scanning the regular Clowncrab.

The entry describes a body that only looks single-segmented, with the nested segments of other Protean arthropods hidden inside and shed through the digestive tract when the crab molts. Each eye stalk is packed with unspecialized cells that regenerate a bitten-off eye, and the crab trims its own stalks when they grow long enough to draw attention. The third stalk behind the eyes is a reproductive organ. In return for shelter the Clowncrab grooms its anemones, cleans off parasites, and returns nutrients through its molt and waste; the assessment calls it a sign of a healthy anemone field.
