Created Great Jaw article covering the stationary giant-clam Leviathan: its location near the CICADA wreck, the tripwire trap and initial electric shock, how to scan it safely, its biology and Collector Leviathan predation, and its Lithium yield
Great Jaw is a Leviathan-class organism in Subnautica 2, a colossal armored mollusc that resembles a giant clam. It is the creature featured prominently in the game's cinematic reveal trailer, and was nicknamed Clamthulu by the developers during production. Unlike the roaming hunters of the moon, the Great Jaw is stationary, sitting with its shell open and waiting for prey to wander inside.
A Great Jaw can be found a short distance from the start of the game, roughly 350 meters south of the opening Lifepod, near the wreck of the CICADA. Because it does not move, it is one of the earliest Leviathan-class creatures a player can reach, though approaching it is dangerous.
The Great Jaw hunts by ambush. Its shell rests open, and a set of glowing pink tendrils spread across the opening act as tripwires. Brushing any of these tendrils causes the shell to slam shut. A player caught inside is trapped and slowly dissolved by digestive acid, leaving only the liquid the creature then feeds on. As a player first draws near, the Great Jaw also releases an initial electric shock, which is survivable and should not be mistaken for the killing trap.
Because the Great Jaw is stationary, scanning it is straightforward as long as the trap is respected:
Approach the open shell but do not swim inside it.
Avoid touching the pink tendrils, since tripping one closes the shell.
Tank the harmless initial electric shock, then aim the Scanner at the shell from outside to complete the scan.
Scanning from outside the mouth lets the player log the creature safely without ever risking being caught.
The Great Jaw is an omnivore. All of its vital organs, including its heart and gills, sit protected inside the shell beneath the eyes and the fleshy interior. According to its Databank entry, the scanned specimen is described as relatively young, and no upper size limit can be established for the species; the largest shells may take decades or centuries to grow. Juvenile Great Jaws are prey for the Collector Leviathan, whose hardened beak can crack their shells open, and the broken shells of eaten juveniles can be found scattered around the Collector's lair.
The Great Jaw is a source of Lithium, making a careful visit worthwhile for players gathering advanced crafting materials, provided they keep clear of the tendrils.
