Appearance
The Epicurean is a stocky oval fish that tapers from an oversized maw to a short, blunt tail, gray-purple above with black speckling and white below. Four symmetrical pectoral fins radiate behind the mouth. The maw carries four rows of thin, backward-pointing teeth that stop prey from escaping once swallowed, and like the Hammerhead it carries a third central eye between its two lateral ones. Individual Epicureans differ visibly in how bloated their stomachs are, and the bloating tells a story.
Behavior and the Tongue Thief
On its own the Epicurean is an unpredictable, wandering omnivore. What makes it genuinely dangerous is its relationship with the Tongue Thief. Epicureans swallow the parasites along with everything else in the runoff pools, and a swallowed Tongue Thief can evade digestion, latch onto the host's tongue, and secrete a chemical that blocks the feeling of fullness. A parasitized Epicurean eats without limit, grows more aggressive toward divers, and develops the severe stomach bloating seen around the Metal Farms. The arrangement feeds the parasite and slowly wrecks the host.
