The Collector Leviathan is the first hostile leviathan-class creature revealed for Subnautica 2. It was showcased in Dev Vlog #3 ("Creating the Collector Leviathan") and in a KRAFTON press release with accompanying concept art and development footage.
The Collector is a gargantuan squid-like predator with a Cthulhu-inspired silhouette. Visual Development Lead Cory Strader began the design process with thumbnail silhouettes before progressing to detailed concepts. The creature features a "split-body glow motif" intended to make it visible from a distance while also conveying shock up close.
It has four tentacles designed to "grab, crush, swat, and terrify players," according to the official description. Senior Technical Animator Stefaan Sorensen engineered the tentacle physics within Unreal Engine 5's Control Rig system to give them a sense of weight and fluid movement through water.
AI Gameplay Lead Engineer Antonio Munoz Gallego designed the Collector's behavior system using UE5 behavior trees and a custom "stimulus" system. In the press release, Gallego explained: "The Collector Leviathan is not just a monster that blindly attacks players. It is an intelligent and highly threatening deep-sea lifeform that actively reacts to player behavior and pursues them."
The creature is described as "easily irritable" with a strong dislike for anything it doesn't recognize in its territory. It can be distracted by fauna or objects like flares. Gallego added that "the Leviathan is constantly re-evaluating the situation in real time," meaning its behavior changes based on what the player does rather than following a scripted loop.
The Collector Leviathan spawns in the Sparse Plains biome. According to development data, it appears approximately 20,000-25,000 units away from the player once they enter the area, giving a brief window of relative safety before the encounter begins.
The creature was developed by a large cross-discipline team. Key contributors include Cory Strader (Visual Development Lead), Antonio Munoz Gallego (AI Gameplay Lead Engineer), Stefaan Sorensen (Senior Technical Animator), Marcelo Figueredo (Lead Character Artist), Colin Knueppel (Principal Animator), Laura Nedal (VFX Artist), and Louis Karim (Game Designer).
The May 2025 leaked milestone document indicated that one leviathan-class creature was cut from the Early Access scope compared to the original development plan. It is unclear which creature was removed.
