Biosampler details from official descriptions and leaks
The Biosampler is a tool in Subnautica 2 used to collect genetic samples from alien creatures. According to the official description: "Take samples for study, and as you learn more about the world, you can evolve your genetics to adapt your body for survival."
Players use the Biosampler on creatures to extract DNA samples. These samples can be studied and processed to unlock genetic modifications that alter the player character's biology. The modifications provide practical survival advantages tailored to the environment.
Information from the June 2025 playtest leak describes gene modification as a major story element. The PDA displays the player's current genetic modifications, suggesting the system is tied to both gameplay progression and narrative. Reported adaptations include temporary cold resistance, improved oxygen efficiency, and enhanced swimming speed.
The Biosampler is a revised version of the Transfuser tool, which was originally planned for the first Subnautica but cut during development. The Transfuser would have allowed players to extract alien DNA samples, process them through a "centrifuge" device, and consume the resulting serums for new abilities. The concept was considered too ambitious for the first game's scope and timeline.
Its return in Subnautica 2 suggests Unknown Worlds views it as a feature that was ahead of its time rather than fundamentally flawed. The shift to Unreal Engine 5 and a larger development team likely made the system more feasible to implement properly.
The Biosampler works alongside the existing creature scanning system from previous Subnautica games. While scanning provides encyclopedic information about a creature's biology and behavior, the Biosampler extracts usable genetic material. Both systems reward exploration and interaction with the local fauna of Planet Zezura.
