The Biosampler is a tool in Subnautica 2 used to collect genetic samples from alien creatures. The official description states: "Take samples for study, and as you learn more about the world, you can evolve your genetics to adapt your body for survival." Genetic modification is both a gameplay mechanic and a major story element.
According to leaked playtest information, players encounter genetic modification within the first minutes of the game. When the pioneer's ship crashes into Zezura's ocean depths, the ship's AI directs them to use an experimental gene-altering machine onboard to survive the crushing pressure. This sets up the genetic modification system as a core narrative thread from the opening sequence rather than something discovered later.
Players use the Biosampler on creatures to extract DNA samples. These samples can be studied and processed to unlock genetic modifications that alter the player character's biology. Dev Vlog #1 (April 23, 2025) showed an "alien slime" mechanic where consuming alien biological material grants genetic modifications, suggesting the system ties into the broader ecosystem rather than being purely equipment-based.
The PDA displays the player's current genetic modifications, tracking which adaptations are active. Information from the June 2025 playtest leak describes gene modification as woven throughout the story progression.

The Biosampler is a revised version of the Transfuser tool, which was planned for the first Subnautica but cut during development. The Transfuser would have let players extract alien DNA, process it through a "centrifuge" device, and consume serums for new abilities. The concept was considered too ambitious for the first game's scope.
Its return in Subnautica 2 reflects both the larger development team and the shift to Unreal Engine 5, which makes more complex gameplay systems feasible. The Biosampler is the single biggest mechanical addition separating Subnautica 2 from its predecessors.
The Biosampler works alongside the creature scanning system from previous games. Dev Vlog #1 showed an expanded scanner tool with radar functionality for locating materials. While scanning provides encyclopedic information about a creature's biology, the Biosampler extracts usable genetic material. Both systems reward exploration and interaction with Zezura's fauna.
