11BioMods are temporary, reversible perks in Subnautica 2, distinct from Adaptations. Where Adaptations are permanent DNA upgrades drawn from Angel Comb bulbs that enter the player's genome and gate progression, BioMods are optional survival and mobility abilities that the player equips and unequips freely. A BioMod does not change the player's genome: it can be swapped out at any time, which is the core difference between the two systems. BioMods are managed at a Bio Lab base module.2233BioMods Versus Adaptations4455It is easy to confuse the two body-modification systems, so the distinction is worth stating plainly. Community materials from before launch sometimes used the term bio-mods loosely for both, but in the current Early Access build they are separate.6677PropertyBioModsAdaptationsPermanenceTemporary and reversible; can be equipped and removed at will.Permanent; enter the genome and cannot be undone.SourceBuilt from creature DNA collected with the Biosampler, then processed at a Bio Lab.Granted by the colored bulbs of Angel Comb growths, consumed on use.RoleOptional perks for mobility, defense, and resource management.Gate major progression, such as deeper diving and passing the heat barrier.88The Bio Lab and the BioMod Pipeline991010BioMods are obtained and equipped through a three-stage pipeline. First, the player collects DNA from the moon's creatures using the Biosampler. Next, that genetic material is taken to a Bio Lab, the base module where BioMods are managed and equipped. Finally, BioMods are produced and slotted using a Gene Augmentation Station. The full chain is: Biosampler, then Bio Lab, then Gene Augmentation Station.11111212Because the whole loop runs through built base modules and a handheld sampler, none of it permanently rewrites the player's biology. That is the line that separates BioMods from Adaptations: an Adaptation, once taken from an Angel Comb bulb, is consumed and locked into the genome, whereas a BioMod sits in an equipment slot and can be changed whenever the player visits a Bio Lab.13131414BioMod Slots15151616In the current Early Access build, the player has one active BioMod slot and up to six passive BioMod slots. Most of the passive slots are locked at first and open up over time, and additional passive slots are planned to arrive in a later update, so the number of perks a player can run at once grows across a playthrough. The exact slot figures here reflect the current build and may change as the game develops. See the Early Access and Development Roadmap for the planned slot expansion.17171818BioMods come in two kinds, and the slot type matches the kind:19192020Active BioMods are triggered manually, for example a Dash burst of speed, and go in the active slot.Passive BioMods trigger automatically by reflex once equipped, for example a Sea Skimmer speed boost near surfaces, and go in the passive slots.21212222Unlocking BioMods23232424A few BioMods are available from early on, unlocked the first time the player interacts with a Bio Lab near the opening Lifepod. The rest are tied to specific creatures and cannot be claimed by an ordinary scan. Scanning a creature with the standard Scanner adds a Databank entry but does not grant its BioMod. To unlock the creature-linked BioMods, the player first needs a Bioscanner attachment that fits onto the regular Scanner; with it equipped, sampling the right creature unlocks the BioMod that creature is tied to.25252626Because the Bioscanner is recovered relatively late, deeper in the world near the alien ruins, most of the creature-linked BioMods only become available in the back half of a playthrough. The starter BioMods carry most of the early game, so the player is not locked out of progress before the Bioscanner is in hand.27272828Active BioMods29293030Active BioMods are used on demand and share a cooldown. The set below appears in the current Early Access build.313132-BioModEffectHow to UnlockDashA short directional burst of speed used to dodge predators or close gaps, on a short cooldown.Starter, granted at the first Bio Lab.PathfinderLeaves a glowing pheromone trail behind the player that can be followed back out of caves, trenches, and large wrecks.Starter, granted at the first Bio Lab.Sonic EchoEmits a pulse that highlights nearby mineral resources within a radius, useful for spotting ore while gathering.Bio-sample a Collector Leviathan.Electric DischargeReleases a shock in a wide area around the player that deters most medium and large predators.Bio-sample an electric eel-type creature.Chum CloudReleases a cloud of bait that pulls nearby predators away for a few seconds, similar to throwing a flare.Bio-sample a toxic-sponge or scavenger creature.32+BioModEffectHow to UnlockDashA short directional burst of speed used to dodge predators or close gaps, on a short cooldown.Starter, granted at the first Bio Lab.PathfinderLeaves a glowing pheromone trail behind the player that can be followed back out of caves, trenches, and large wrecks.Starter, granted at the first Bio Lab.Sonic EchoEmits a pulse that highlights nearby mineral resources within a radius, useful for spotting ore while gathering.Bio-sample a Collector Leviathan.Electric DischargeReleases a shock in a wide area around the player that deters most medium and large predators.Bio-sample an electric eel-type creature.Chum CloudReleases a cloud of bait that pulls nearby predators away for a few seconds, similar to throwing a flare.Bio-sample a Houndgar and a toxic sponge.3333Electric Discharge covers the whole area around the player rather than a single direction, which makes it a reliable panic button, though it does not deter every species (Hammerheads, for example, appear to be unaffected). Chum Cloud has to be aimed and has a longer cooldown, so it is more situational.34343535Passive BioMods36363737Passive BioMods stay active once equipped and trigger by reflex without input. The set below appears in the current Early Access build.383839-BioModEffectHow to UnlockSea SkimmerIncreases swim speed when the player is close to the seafloor or another surface.Starter, granted at the first Bio Lab.Oxygen ControlSlows oxygen consumption while the player is not moving, stretching how long a single breath lasts when held still.Starter, granted at the first Bio Lab.BioluminescenceMakes the player glow, providing a constant personal light source.Bio-sample a glowing reef creature.CamouflageHides the player from predators while standing still. See Survival Mechanics for how hunger, thirst, and oxygen work, and Adaptations for the permanent, genome-altering counterpart system.47474848See Also49495050Adaptations, the permanent Angel Comb based system that gates environments.Bio Lab, the base module where BioMods are managed and equipped.Biosampler, the tool used to collect creature DNA.Scanner and Tools and Equipment.51515252BioMod Roster At Early Access Launch53535454The Early Access build ships with fifteen BioMods grouped into two roster classes: five active BioMods and ten passive BioMods. Active BioMods are triggered abilities that consume a cooldown when used; passive BioMods provide continuous, always-on benefits while equipped. The split is documented below for reference; specific stats for individual BioMods (cooldown timers, percentage values, detection radii) are recorded on each BioMod's own article rather than duplicated here.55555656Active BioMods (5)57575858Dash: short directional burst used to break out of a predator lunge or close a small gap.Pathfinder: releases glowing particles you can follow to retrace a path, useful when Proteus's low-visibility caves disorient navigation.Sonic Echo: emits a sonar pulse that highlights nearby resources and ore on the HUD.Electric Discharge: releases an electric shock that deters medium-to-large predators.Chum Cloud: releases bait that distracts predators away from the player's position.59596060Passive BioMods (10)61616262Sea Skimmer: increases swim speed when close to underwater surfaces or the seafloor.Oxygen Control: reduces oxygen consumption while standing still.Bioluminescence: the player glows in the dark, improving visibility in caves and at night.Camouflage: the player becomes invisible to predators while not moving.Water Retention: doubles the water gain received from each hydration source.Homing Sense: detects nearby bases that have electrical power, surfaced as a HUD ping.Threat Sense: detects nearby threats within a fixed radius and emits an audio alert.Dermal Garden: slowly grows nutritious algae on the player's skin that can be harvested for food. Stackable.Slow Metabolism: reduces the rate at which the player's food bar depletes.Water Secretion: slowly fills a water packet by filtering fresh water from seawater. Stackable.63636464Players can equip one active BioMod and up to six passive BioMods at once, with most passive slots unlocked over the course of progression at the Bio Lab. Additional passive slots are planned for later Early Access updates.
