Closed Alpha Playtest
August 27, 2026 at 08:56 AM
Added the closed beta window announced in August 2026, corrected the sign-up flow to the current waitlist portal, recorded the studio's own summary of alpha feedback, and refreshed the status date
Undead Labs is running a closed alpha playtest for State of Decay 3. The first wave began rolling out in May 2026, and selected sign-ups have started receiving invitation emails as of mid-May 2026. The alpha is the first time members of the public will be able to play State of Decay 3 in any form. The team has stated that more playtest waves are planned throughout the year, so missing the May wave does not mean missing every test.

The May 2026 wave focuses on four pillars: four-player online co-op with untethered movement, the new base-building system, new resource strategies, and a heavy focus on combat. Undead Labs has described the alpha combat layer as rewritten from scratch with improved animations, tactile weapon response, and dynamic encounters with the infected. The build is a slice of these systems rather than a complete campaign experience, and Undead Labs has been clear that it is a work-in-progress meant to gather feedback.

Sign-ups are handled through the official State of Decay playtest portal. The portal now runs as a waitlist: players register their interest, and anyone who receives an invitation continues through a link sent to their email address and gets a dashboard of their own. When sign-ups first opened in April 2026 the flow instead asked players to link a Discord account, which the studio used for playtest communication and invitation routing; that step drew complaints at the time because the rush of new sign-ups pushed it into rate limits. Selection is not first-come-first-served beyond hitting the cap, and registrations stay on file for later waves. The studio has confirmed that anyone who signed up during the alpha period is still on the list for future playtests and does not need to register again.
Beginning in mid-May 2026, selected players have started receiving emails confirming participation in the first wave. Receiving an invitation email is the official confirmation that a sign-up has been picked; the email contains the specific instructions for that wave. Players who did not get a May invitation remain in the pool for later waves and do not need to sign up again. Undead Labs has emphasised that subsequent waves will continue across the year, with the team sharing insights and feedback with everyone as the rollout progresses.
The alpha is an early test of in-progress systems. It is not a demo, it is not a complete campaign, and it is not a final-quality build. Performance, stability, and content scope are all expected to evolve before launch. Undead Labs has also clarified that elements from the original 2020 reveal trailer, including infected wildlife such as zombie animals, will not be in the game.
The terms of the closed alpha control what testers can publicly post about it. Players who get into the wave should read the official terms before posting clips, screenshots, or detailed write-ups. Embargo and streaming policies are set by Undead Labs and are subject to change between waves.
Sign-up runs entirely through the studio's own playtest portal. There is no separate store-side playtest or demo entry for State of Decay 3 on any platform, so a store wishlist does not put a player in the queue and there is no request-access button to press on a storefront. The survey on the portal is the only route in.
On August 26, 2026 the studio confirmed the next stage: closed beta playtests are coming before the end of 2026, described as the community's biggest hands-on look at the game so far ahead of the 2027 launch. That announcement also confirmed the programme will widen along two axes rather than one, reaching both more players and more platforms as launch approaches. It is the first dated commitment on the beta, and the first public statement of any kind about the game since the June reveal.
The Xbox Games Showcase took place on Sunday, June 7, 2026, and State of Decay 3 returned with its first gameplay reveal. The studio confirmed the game is aiming for a 2027 release, is also coming to PlayStation 5 alongside Xbox Series X|S and PC, and that the reveal trailer is built entirely from in-game footage. Undead Labs has said it will keep expanding the alpha and beta playtest waves as the game moves toward launch.
By early June 2026 the first wave was already underway, with a limited group of selected community members and content creators playing the build hands-on ahead of any wider reveal. Further waves remain planned across the rest of the year, so the program is ongoing rather than a single one-off test.
Separately, in July 2026 Undead Labs confirmed that it is leaving Xbox and moving to new ownership as part of a wider reset of Microsoft's games business. The studio said State of Decay 3 is still coming and that its work on the game continues, and Xbox said none of its announced games are being cancelled. Undead Labs has not announced any change to the playtest program, so the alpha and later beta waves are still expected to keep expanding through the rest of the year.
Alongside the closed alpha, Undead Labs runs a smaller, longer-running feedback group it calls the Player Council. Studio head Philip Holt has said the council has been working with the team for about a year, which places its start well before the public alpha sign-ups opened in April 2026.
The council is drawn from established members of the game's community rather than from a general sign-up. Holt has described its makeup as long-time fans of the series, some of them content creators, some of them moderators in the community, and a large share of them dedicated single-player players. That last point matters to the studio's reading of its own feedback: it has cited council members who play alone as the group that most strongly endorsed the untethered shared world, which fed directly into how Online Co-Op was designed.
On June 5, 2026, the studio hosted the council in person at its Seattle offices for a weekend. The published account of the event describes time spent with the development team, hands-on gameplay sessions and structured feedback sessions, and a viewing party for the games showcase at which the first gameplay trailer was shown. The studio released a short video about the weekend later that month.
The weekend is the clearest public example of how the council differs from the alpha: it is a small, named group with direct and ongoing access to the team, where the alpha is a much larger anonymous test population.
The studio has also published its own summary of what the first alpha wave told it, which is the closest thing yet to a public read on how the build is landing. It singled out combat against multiple special infected, improvements to the world's lighting, sound and weather, cosmetic breadth in the clothing options along with the addition of glasses and beards, and smoother, more reactive character movement. Those are the studio's stated highlights rather than a changelog, so treat them as the areas the team is happy with rather than as a list of what changed between builds.
The first alpha wave is explicitly not the end of testing. The studio has said the sign-up response was overwhelming relative to the number of slots, that comparatively few people are in the build so far, and that this is the first of several tests. A second alpha has been confirmed as coming, followed by beta tests during the run-up to the 2027 launch. The Creative Director has since put that sequence on the record directly, saying the team will be expanding the alpha and then the closed beta to more players over time, and giving the reason: "this is our largest map ever and with untethered multiplayer", which the studio needs the extra scale to stress-test and fine-tune.
Engagement in the first wave has been described in general terms only: staff have mentioned alpha participants reaching around 90 hours of play within the first week. No participant counts, invite totals or acceptance rates have been published.
Information on this page reflects publicly confirmed details as of August 27, 2026. Invitation rollout for the first wave began in mid-May 2026. Specific dates inside the May window, the exact number of slots, and the schedule for follow-up waves will be filled in as Undead Labs publishes them.
