Overview
Starsand Island launched in Early Access on February 11, 2026 as a day-one Xbox Game Pass title. The game is available through both Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscriptions. Players who prefer to own the game outright can also purchase it separately from the Microsoft Store.
On Xbox, Starsand Island is part of the Xbox Game Preview program, which is Microsoft's equivalent of Steam Early Access. The game is still in active development, with content and features being expanded through regular updates leading toward a full release in Summer 2026.
Supported Platforms
The Game Pass version of Starsand Island supports the following platforms:
Xbox Series X|S (console)
Windows PC (requires Windows 10 version 18362.0 or higher)
Xbox Cloud Gaming (browser-based streaming on phones, tablets, and other devices)
Compatible gaming handhelds (via Xbox Play Anywhere)
The game is not available on Xbox One. For a full breakdown of hardware specs, see the System Requirements page.
Xbox Play Anywhere
Starsand Island supports Xbox Play Anywhere. This means a single digital purchase from the Microsoft Store grants access on both Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC at no extra cost. Save data, game add-ons, and achievements sync automatically between Xbox console and PC through Xbox cloud saves.
Play Anywhere applies to the Microsoft Store and Xbox versions only. It does not extend to the Steam version of the game. See the Cross-Save Limitations section below for details.
Xbox Cloud Gaming
Starsand Island is playable through Xbox Cloud Gaming, which streams the game to supported devices without requiring a local installation. Cloud Gaming is included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions.
The cloud version supports both controller and mouse/keyboard input. Players can access it through a web browser at xbox.com/play or through the Xbox app on mobile devices.

Patch Timing: Xbox vs. Steam
One of the most commonly reported issues with the Game Pass version is delayed updates compared to the Steam release. Because Microsoft requires all Xbox patches to go through a certification process before they can be pushed to players, updates typically arrive on Xbox days or even weeks after they appear on Steam.
During the early weeks after launch, the gap became significant. By early March 2026, community members reported that the Xbox version was roughly two weeks and over a dozen patches behind the Steam version. The developers have acknowledged this issue and explained that they have no control over when Microsoft approves and publishes updates.
In practice, Xbox players tend to receive consolidated patches that bundle multiple Steam updates into a single release. While this means each Xbox patch contains more fixes, it also means players wait longer between updates. For detailed patch information, see the Update History page.
Cross-Save Limitations
Cross-save between the Xbox/Microsoft Store version and the Steam version is not supported. Save files from the Game Pass or Xbox version cannot be transferred to the Steam version, and vice versa.
Players who have attempted to manually copy save files between the two platforms have reported that the process does not work, likely because the Xbox Game Preview build and Steam Early Access build run different internal versions at any given time. Players who switch from Game Pass to Steam should expect to start a new save file.
Within the Xbox ecosystem, however, cloud saves sync automatically between Xbox console and Windows PC through Xbox Play Anywhere. For more details on how saving works in general, see the Save System page.
Achievements
Starsand Island includes 33 Xbox achievements worth a total of 1,000 Gamerscore. Completion time is estimated at 60 to 80 hours. Achievements are shared across Xbox console and PC through Play Anywhere, so progress toward any achievement carries over between devices within the Xbox ecosystem.
Multiplayer on Game Pass
Multiplayer is not yet available in the current Early Access build. The developer's roadmap targets cooperative multiplayer for June 2026, which will allow players to invite friends to help with farming, fishing, exploration, and combat. Once multiplayer launches, Game Pass subscribers will be able to play together through Xbox online services.
Future Platform Releases
Starsand Island is currently available on Xbox Series X|S and PC (both Steam and Microsoft Store). The full release, planned for Summer 2026, will also bring the game to PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. Whether the game will remain on Game Pass beyond the Early Access period has not been confirmed.
Tips for Game Pass Players
Use Xbox Cloud Gaming to try the game before downloading the full install.
If you play on both Xbox console and PC, take advantage of Play Anywhere for seamless progress sync.
Be aware that Xbox patches may lag behind Steam. Check the Update History page to see which version is current on each platform.
DLC items (furniture sets, outfits, vehicles) are not included with the Game Pass subscription and must be purchased separately from the Microsoft Store.
If you plan to switch to the Steam version later, note that save files cannot be transferred between platforms.
