Treasure Maps are Legendary-tier misc items that mark the location of hidden chests placed across the archipelago before the current troubles. Reading one reveals a pin on the player's world map; sailing to the marked island and digging at the indicated spot rewards the chest's contents.
Maps are single-use: the pin is cleared once the chest has been opened, and the paper is consumed from inventory.
Picking up a map opens a journal entry and drops a single dig marker on the world map. Sail to the marked island and look for the dig spot on the ground: it shows as a grave or a mound of dirt, often with a skeleton beside it. Stand on the centre of the marker, then dig to raise the buried chest.
Digging needs a Shovel, which is crafted from 3 Copper Ingot and 10 Wood at the Workbench. The Shovel is a tool with a dedicated dig action rather than a passive item, so it has to be equipped and switched to its dig function before the chest will surface. Without it the marked spot yields nothing.
Maps are single-use. Once the chest is opened the marker clears and the paper leaves your inventory, so each map can only be cashed in once.
The signature series is a set of nine maps drawn by Blackbeard's crew during their raids. Each belongs to a different crew member and points to a distinct cache on a specific island. Collecting and cashing in all nine is a long-running exploration goal and the basis of a dedicated Blackbeard Treasure Maps article.
Image | Map | Owner |
|---|---|---|
| Blackbeard Crew's First Map | First mate's cache |
| Blackbeard Crew's Second Map | Quartermaster's cache |
| Blackbeard Crew's Third Map | Boatswain's cache |
| Blackbeard Crew's Fourth Map | Gunner's cache |
| Blackbeard Crew's Fifth Map | Carpenter's cache |
| Blackbeard Crew's Sixth Map | Sailmaker's cache |
| Blackbeard Crew's Seventh Map | Cook's cache |
| Blackbeard Crew's Eighth Map | Powder monkey's cache |
| Blackbeard Crew's Ninth Map | Lookout's cache |
Each cache rewards a mix of Piastre, raw materials, and occasionally a unique cosmetic or recipe paper. See Blackbeard Treasure Maps for the full loot tables and island locations.
In practice the Blackbeard crew chests tend to hold a stack of crafting ingots used to ascend rare weapons to Epic, plus at least one Epic-tier item, which makes the nine-map hunt a strong mid-game gear and upgrade source. Exact contents per map are listed on the Blackbeard Treasure Maps page.
Looted from Blackbeard pirate-camp chests found on the islands. Camp chests from the coastal jungle onward can drop maps from the set, and a given map has no single fixed source.
Dropped by Blackbeard's named crew members and lieutenants during ship-to-ship encounters.
Found in rare loot tables of arsenal chests unlocked with the Arsenal Key.
Occasionally purchased from Smugglers of Port Royal at high reputation.
Maps do not expire. A player can hold the full nine-map set indefinitely and cash them in on one dedicated voyage.
Chest contents are fixed per map, not random. If the spoiler tables are consulted, low-value maps can be sold to smugglers instead of cashed in.
Bring a shovel or the appropriate digging tool. The dig spot will not yield the chest otherwise.
Each map you hold pins its own marker, so carrying several at once lets you plan an efficient dig route between nearby islands on a single voyage.
Keep a Shovel repaired and in your bar before setting out. Arriving at a dig site without one means a second trip.
