Overview

Rainbow Trout is a cold-water fish found in ocean zones in Starsand Island. It only appears during Winter in snowy weather, making it one of the more condition-restricted ocean catches. With a sell price of 137g, it falls in the mid-range of ocean fish values. Rainbow Trout can be processed into Fish Fillet at the Separator or sold directly for profit.

How to Catch

Rainbow Trout requires a specific combination of conditions. All three factors must align for it to appear:

• Season: Winter only. Rainbow Trout does not spawn in Spring, Summer, or Autumn.

• Weather: Snowy only. Clear or rainy winter days will not produce Rainbow Trout. Check the weather forecast on your in-game phone and plan your fishing trip for snowy days.

• Time: 12:00 to 22:00. This is a daytime-to-evening window, so head to the coast around noon.

• Bait: Meat Bait is required. Craft it at the Chopper I using any caught fish as input material.

The best ocean fishing spots are along the coastline near Half-Moon Bay and Blue Beach. Cast your line toward visible fish shadows after chumming the water with Meat Bait.

Other Winter Snowy Fish

Rainbow Trout shares its Winter/Snowy conditions with two other ocean fish. When heading out on a snowy winter day, you can target all three in the same trip:

Note that Lake Trout is found in Lake zones, not the Ocean. Bring both Meat Bait and Veggie Bait to catch Rainbow Trout and Whitefish in the same ocean session.

• Process into Fish Fillet at the Separator

• Sell directly at shops for 137g, or at the Merchant Ship for 274g (double value)

• Place in a Fish Pond for breeding (no oxygen cost)

• Contribute to Islandpedia stamp completion under Aquatic Life

Tips

• Rainbow Trout has no oxygen requirement for Fish Pond placement, making it a free addition to any pond without cutting into your oxygen budget.

• The 12:00 start time means you have a full 10-hour window. Arrive at the coast at noon with a stack of Meat Bait and you should have plenty of time to catch several.

• Since snowy weather is not guaranteed every winter day, check the forecast and prioritize Rainbow Trout, Whitefish, and other snowy-exclusive fish when snow does appear.

• Selling to the Merchant Ship at double value (274g) is more profitable than processing Rainbow Trout into Fish Fillet for cooking.
