New article: modding overview including Steam Workshop plans and community SMF project
Starsand Island will receive official mod support in May 2026, according to the post-launch roadmap. The update will include basic creator tools, in-game mod integration, and Steam Workshop support for sharing mods. Seed Sparkle Lab has stated they support "full freedom for modding" as part of their development philosophy.
The official rollout includes:
Creator tools: A set of tools for building custom content — details are still sparse, but furniture, clothing, and decorations are the expected first targets
Steam Workshop integration: Players will be able to upload, browse, and subscribe to mods directly through the Steam Workshop
In-game mod manager: The game client will handle mod loading and potential conflicts
The community has already started work on the Starsand Modding Framework (SMF), an open-source project hosted on GitHub. Inspired by Minecraft's Fabric and Forge mod loaders, SMF aims to provide a framework for deeper modding beyond what the official tools may support.
As of February 2026, SMF is in a planning and research phase. The project is exploring what modding hooks and data formats the game exposes, and how to build tools on top of them. Seed Sparkle Lab shared a modding update on February 19, 2026, acknowledging the community project and expressing support.
Based on the developer's statements and the game's architecture, the following mod categories are expected:
Custom furniture: New decorative items and building objects
Clothing and cosmetics: New outfits and character customization options
Decorations: Seasonal items, themed sets, and community-designed pieces
Quality of life: UI improvements, inventory management, and farming automation
More complex mods (new NPCs, new areas, gameplay mechanics) may become possible through the community SMF framework, but are unlikely to be supported by the official tools at launch.
Seed Sparkle Lab has confirmed there will be no anti-cheat systems in Starsand Island. This is a deliberate choice to keep the game open to modding, custom content, and community experimentation.
