STAR WARS Zero Company is set in the twilight of the Clone Wars, the final stretch of the galaxy-spanning conflict that frames the game's story. The game uses that backdrop without retelling the larger war: its focus is the shadow conflict happening at the edges, the war beneath the war.

In Star Wars lore, the Clone Wars are fought between the Galactic Republic, defended by its clone armies, and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, the Separatists, who field vast droid forces. Hawks served the Republic before the events of the game and now works outside its chain of command. The era's familiar sights, clone troopers, battle droids, and a galaxy stretched thin by war, set the stage.
Rather than command a frontline army, Zero Company runs covert operations, the missions the official war does not see. That framing lets the game tell a grittier, character-driven story about expendable professionals doing dirty work, while the headline battles of the Clone Wars rage elsewhere.

The game visits locations drawn from across Star Wars lore, including the frontier world of Vandor and the mining world of Mapuzo. Anakin Skywalker, a central figure of the Clone Wars in the wider saga, makes a confirmed appearance. Anything beyond what the game itself shows belongs to the broader franchise and is not necessarily reflected in Zero Company's own story.
