Overview
Traversing the open world of Roco Kingdom: World is a core part of the gameplay experience. Players have access to three distinct mount types (water, land, and air), a universal gliding system, and fast travel points scattered across the map. Every rideable Spirit has unique riding animations based on its species, giving each mount a distinct personality and feel. Spirits that are too small to carry the player use a charming reversal mechanic where the Spirit rides on the player instead, sitting on their shoulder or being carried in their arms.
Flying Mounts
Flying mounts grant the greatest freedom of movement in Roco Kingdom: World, allowing players to soar above the landscape and reach areas that are completely inaccessible on foot. The entry-level flying mount, the Winter Sparrow (冬羽雀), is given to the player near the start of the game, ensuring that basic aerial exploration is available early. As players progress, more powerful flying mounts become available through story completion, evolution, and special encounters.

Mount | Chinese Name | How to Obtain | Speed / Stats | Key Features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Winter Sparrow | 冬羽雀 | Given at the start of the game | Base flying speed; low stamina consumption | Entry-level flying mount. Excellent stability and low stamina drain make it reliable for early aerial exploration. Evolves into Storm Bird at level 30. |
Storm Bird | 岚鸟 | Evolve Winter Sparrow at level 30 | Significantly faster than Winter Sparrow | The evolved form of Winter Sparrow. Improved speed and stamina pool. Essential for reaching distant locations and high-altitude zones efficiently. |
Holy Feather Wing King | 圣羽翼王 | Complete all seven sections of Chapter 1 plus the chapter boss battle | Premium flying speed | A Wing-type Spirit King. Premium flying mount with superior aerial handling. Serves as a reward for dedicated early-game completion. |
Royal Griffin | 皇家狮鹫 | VIP mount; found at port garrison | 240 speed on land; free land/flight switching | Dual-mode mount that can seamlessly switch between ground and aerial travel. The 240 land speed makes it competitive as a land mount as well. Located at the port garrison area. |
Wyvern | 翼龙 | Mid-to-late game acquisition | Top-tier air speed in current version | The highest-performance air mount available. Supports seamless combat transitions, allowing players to engage enemies directly from the air without dismounting. |
The Winter Sparrow is the first flying mount most players will use. Because it evolves into the Storm Bird at level 30, investing early experience into the Winter Sparrow pays dividends throughout the entire game. Players who complete the full Chapter 1 boss gauntlet gain access to the Holy Feather Wing King, which is one of the strongest early-game flying mounts available.
Land Mounts
Land mounts provide a reliable speed boost for covering long distances across plains, roads, and open terrain. While they lack the vertical freedom of flying mounts, land mounts tend to have higher raw ground speed and additional combat utility. Some land mounts, like the Sonic Hound (音速犬), come with passive combat bonuses that trigger when initiating battles while mounted.
Mount | Chinese Name | How to Obtain | Speed / Stats | Key Features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Sonic Hound | 音速犬 | Entry-level land mount; early game acquisition | 180 base speed; +50% after evolution | The first land mount most players obtain. Comes with a first-strike bonus that triggers 100% damage on the opening hit when initiating combat while mounted. Evolution boosts its speed to 270. |
Platinum Unicorn | 白金独角兽 | Found east of Believer's Village; requires level 40+; use rainbow ball to capture | Top-tier land speed | The highest-tier land mount. Requires significant progression (level 40+) and a rainbow ball for capture. Its speed and regal appearance make it a prized companion for overworld travel. |
Ulata | 乌拉塔 | Spawns near Chenxi Mountain's magic source | Moderate speed with double-jump | A unique land mount with a double-jump ability, allowing it to reach elevated terrain that other land mounts cannot access. Particularly useful in mountainous and hilly regions. |
Big Skull Dragon | 大头骨龙 | Catch in the wild through standard capture methods | Standard ground speed | Standard ground movement with increased speed across plains and roads. One of the earlier land mounts available through regular wild capture. |
Water Mounts
Water mounts open up aquatic routes that are otherwise impassable, including rivers, lakes, and ocean areas. These mounts are essential for accessing underwater caves, tidal zones at Obestian Lake, and the hidden Moon Rabbit Dark Harbor (月兔暗港). Water-type exploration is a significant part of the game's content, with many hidden items and rare spirits accessible only from the water.
Mount | Chinese Name | How to Obtain | Key Features |
|---|---|---|---|
Board Shell (series) | 板板壳 | Water mount acquisition through standard gameplay | The primary water mount for ocean exploration. Allows players to traverse rivers, lakes, and open sea. Required for reaching underwater caves and coastal hidden zones. |
Ducky | 鸭吉吉 | Capture using stun mechanics in the wild | Allows traversal across rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water. A reliable early water mount option. |

Spirit Size and Ridability
Not every Spirit is large enough to serve as a traditional mount. The game classifies spirits into rideable and non-rideable categories based on their physical size relative to the player character. Large spirits like the Storm Bird, Platinum Unicorn, and Wyvern support full riding with unique mount animations. Smaller spirits trigger the "elves riding Roco" reversal mechanic, where the spirit perches on the player's shoulder, nestles in their arms, or floats alongside them. Each small spirit has its own unique positioning and idle animations while being carried.
Riding System
The Spirit riding system is one of Roco Kingdom: World's most distinctive features. When a player mounts a large Spirit, their character climbs on top and rides it in a manner appropriate to the Spirit's body type. A dragon-like Spirit might be ridden on its back, while a large bird-type Spirit carries the player between its wings. Each rideable Spirit has its own set of mount animations, turning the simple act of traveling into a visually engaging experience.
For smaller Spirits that cannot physically carry the player, the game introduces the "elves riding Roco" mechanic. In this system, the Spirit does not serve as a traditional mount. Instead, the Spirit perches on the player's shoulder, nestles in their arms, or floats alongside them. This reversal creates endearing visual interactions between the player character and their tiny companion. Each small Spirit has its own unique positioning and idle animations while being carried, adding personality to every Spirit regardless of its size.
Gliding
The gliding traversal system is available to all players throughout the open world and does not require a specific Spirit or item to use. When the player jumps from a high point, they can deploy a glider to coast through the air. Gliding is the primary method for crossing wide gaps between cliffs, descending safely from mountain peaks, and covering horizontal distance without a flying mount.
While gliding does not provide the same freedom as a full air mount, it serves as a reliable tool for vertical traversal and is available from early in the game. Players who have not yet evolved their Winter Sparrow into a Storm Bird can still reach many elevated or distant locations by climbing to a high vantage point and gliding across.
Fast Travel
Fast travel points are scattered across the world map as landmarks and waypoints. Once a player discovers and activates a fast travel point, they can teleport to it from anywhere on the map, cutting down travel time for frequently visited locations. These points are typically placed near major settlements, dungeon entrances, and key story locations.

The Magic Academy serves as the central hub of the fast travel network. It connects all major regions of the continent through teleport arrays, allowing players to quickly jump between distant zones. Returning to the Magic Academy is always an option, making it the natural home base from which exploration radiates outward.
Environmental Awareness
Spirits are not merely passive companions while exploring. They exhibit weather-reactive behaviors that bring the world to life. During rainstorms, Spirits may seek shelter under trees or rock overhangs. On clear, sunny days, they bask in the warmth and display relaxed idle animations. These behaviors are cosmetic but add a layer of immersion that makes the Spirits feel like living creatures rather than game objects.
The day-night cycle also influences exploration in meaningful ways. Dark-attribute creatures only appear at night, making nighttime expeditions essential for players who want to complete their Spirit collection. The shift between daytime and nighttime exploration creates two distinct moods: daytime is bright and open, while nighttime introduces a sense of mystery as rare and elusive Spirits emerge from the shadows.
Dual-Person Mounts
For players who enjoy exploring with friends, Roco Kingdom: World offers unlockable co-ride vehicles that allow two players to share a single mount. These dual-person mounts provide paired exploration, where one player steers and the other rides along. Co-ride vehicles are unlocked through multiplayer progression milestones and represent a tangible reward for social play.
In addition to co-ride vehicles, the hand-holding system (拉手同行) allows two players to link together and move across the map as a pair. While traveling in this linked state, the duo can trigger hidden story easter eggs that are only accessible through paired exploration. These hidden interactions include unique NPC dialogue, secret environmental events, and small narrative vignettes that reward players for exploring together.
Magic Academy Airship
The Magic Academy itself is a floating sky city, suspended high above the continent. Players access it via an airship that serves as both a narrative set piece and a functional transportation method. The airship ride to and from the Magic Academy provides sweeping views of the world below and acts as a visual reminder of the scale of the game's open world.
As the main hub connecting all world regions, the Magic Academy is where players return to train their Spirits, access shops and services, interact with key story characters, and use the teleport arrays that link to every major zone on the continent. The airship is the primary means of reaching the Academy for the first time, and subsequent visits can be made instantly through the fast travel system.
Mount Progression Tips
Prioritize evolving Winter Sparrow to Storm Bird. Reaching level 30 on your Winter Sparrow should be a primary goal, as the Storm Bird is the backbone of aerial exploration throughout the mid-game.
Save your rainbow ball for the Platinum Unicorn. Rainbow balls are rare. The Platinum Unicorn east of Believer's Village is one of the best uses for this capture item, providing top-tier land speed for the rest of the game.
Use the Sonic Hound's first-strike bonus strategically. Initiating combat while riding the Sonic Hound triggers a 100% damage bonus on the first hit. This is excellent for quickly defeating overworld spirits during farming runs.
Unlock water mounts before visiting Obestian Lake. The lake's tidal flats and underwater caves contain valuable items and rare spirits, but they are only accessible with a water mount.
The Royal Griffin's dual-mode is unmatched for convenience. Being able to freely switch between land and flight without dismounting saves significant time when navigating zones with mixed terrain.
Ulata's double-jump opens shortcuts. In mountainous areas like Light Wind Mountain Foothills, Ulata can reach elevated platforms that other land mounts simply cannot access.
