Initial area guide for Withered Wasteland
The Withered Wasteland is the first area players explore in Pokemon Pokopia. Once a lush town inspired by Fuchsia City from the Kanto region, it has dried out from lack of rain and Pokemon activity. This is where Ditto wakes from its slumber and meets Professor Tangrowth for the first time. The tutorial takes place here, and the area serves as the foundation for learning all basic mechanics.
The main Important Request in the Withered Wasteland is "Yawn Up A Storm." The player must rescue an Onix trapped in rubble and help restore rain and humidity to the area. Completing this quest triggers a major story event involving Kyogre, the legendary Pokemon, and unlocks access to both Bleak Beach and Rocky Ridges. It also advances the player to Great Trainer Rank.
Six of the thirteen moves are learned in the Withered Wasteland:
Move | Teacher | Function |
|---|---|---|
Water Gun | Squirtle | Spray water; revitalize ground |
Leafage | Bulbasaur | Grow grass and plant patches |
Cut | Scyther | Chop trees and harvest logs |
Rock Smash | Hitmonchan | Punch through soft terrain |
Rototiller | Drilbur | Till soil for farming |
Jump | Magikarp | Basic jumping |
Ditto's Starting Hut: Where the player wakes up and receives initial guidance from Professor Tangrowth.
Dilapidated Home (right of Pokemon Center): Contains the Ninja Outfit Human Record, referencing Koga and Janine of Fuchsia City Gym.
Mysterious Mural: A hidden underground room accessible by breaking a specific rock wall. Players collect items to fit into mural slots, revealing lore about the world's past.
Pokemon Center ruins: The first Pokemon Center the player can rebuild once reaching Environment Level 3.
The Withered Wasteland features the largest selection of common Pokemon in the game, including all three Kanto starters and their evolution lines. Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle appear during the tutorial, while species like Pidgey, Oddish, Machop, Bellsprout, Paras, and Cubone can be attracted through habitats. The special Pokemon Peakychu (an unusually pale Pikachu with the Illuminate specialty) is encountered here during the story.
After completing the "Yawn Up A Storm" quest, Kyogre appears in a story event. This is the first legendary Pokemon encounter in the game.
