Enhanced with specific trigger conditions (parry blue / dodge red at last second), control inputs (L1 / R1), Sha-Chi Essence building, counterattack window details
Ghostep is a signature repositioning mechanic in Phantom Blade Zero that teleports Soul behind an enemy in a cinematic flash of smoke. It is one of the most satisfying and rewarding techniques in the game's combat system — a defensive response that instantly transforms into an offensive advantage. Successfully performing Ghosteps also builds Sha-Chi Essence, the sub-resource needed for Power Surge ultimate attacks.
There are two ways to trigger a Ghostep, corresponding to the two types of dangerous enemy attacks:
Parry a Brutal Move (blue flash): when an enemy telegraphs a Brutal Move (indicated by a blue flash), tap L1 at the precise moment of impact. A successful parry triggers the Ghostep, teleporting Soul behind the enemy
Dodge a Killer Move (red flash): when an enemy launches a Killer Move (indicated by a red flash), tap R1 or dodge at the last possible second before impact. Killer Moves cannot be blocked or parried — the only response is evasion, and timing it perfectly triggers a Ghostep
After either trigger, Soul appears behind the enemy in a brief cloud of smoke, with a window to launch a counterattack from this advantageous position. The teleport animation is cinematic but quick, maintaining combat flow without interrupting the rhythm of an encounter.
Ghostep serves multiple purposes simultaneously:
Repositioning: instantly moves Soul behind the enemy, creating opportunities for back attacks and avoiding follow-up strikes
Sha-Chi Essence generation: each successful Ghostep builds Sha-Chi Essence, the sub-resource needed to activate Power Surge ultimate abilities
Counterattack window: the brief window after a Ghostep allows uninterrupted damage before the enemy can reorient
Flow maintenance: keeps combat flowing smoothly rather than forcing purely defensive play — the best players chain Ghosteps into extended combo strings
Ghostep sits at the intersection of the game's defensive and offensive systems. It transforms parry and deflection from a purely defensive act into an offensive springboard. It rewards learning enemy attack patterns — not just to survive, but to create the precise timing windows that trigger the teleport.
In combination with weapon switching, Ghostep enables devastating sequences: parry an attack to Ghostep behind an enemy, switch weapons to restore Sha-Chi, then unleash a combo from behind. The mechanic becomes highly rewarding once mastered, and multiple previews cited it as one of the most satisfying moments in the game's combat loop.
In Hellwalker Mode, boss AI adapts to player behavior. Bosses that detect frequent Ghostep attempts may alter their attack patterns, delay the timing of their Brutal and Killer Moves, or introduce new attacks specifically designed to punish predictable parry attempts. This forces players to vary their approach rather than relying on Ghostep as a single strategy.
Trigger 1: parry a Brutal Move (blue flash) with L1
Trigger 2: dodge a Killer Move (red flash) with R1 at the last second
Effect: teleport behind enemy + counterattack window
Resource: builds Sha-Chi Essence for Power Surge
