Equipment Enhancement

Equipment Enhancement is performed at Spirit Mirror locations throughout Kyoto and its environs. Special materials are spent to strengthen three pieces of Musashi's gear: the sword, which governs attack power; his clothes, which govern health and stamina; and the Oni Gauntlet, which governs Oni power.

Enhancing Skills

A second track of enhancement uses Souls, specifically red souls, together with special materials to improve basic stats and special skills, and to learn entirely new abilities. Different skills call for different materials, so progress on one skill does not automatically fund another. Enhanced skills and abilities can only be used under certain conditions and by inputting specific commands, so learning a skill is the first step rather than the whole story.

Several core abilities are gated behind this system rather than available from the start: Deflect, Chain Issen, and the Blazing State described under Combat System are all unlocked through skill enhancement, not handed to the player at the beginning of the game.

Two Skill Tracks

Steam's achievement list separates learning and upgrading all basic or special skills from learning and upgrading all basic and special skills, which confirms basic skills and special skills as two distinct tracks of skill enhancement rather than a single combined list.

The Storehouse

Equipment Enhancement shares its access point with the storehouse: any items or Hozuki Pouches contents that cannot be carried are sent there automatically, and a Spirit Mirror is also how a player reaches the storehouse to replenish supplies and reorganize an inventory.

A Separate System: Charm Enhancement

Equipment and skill enhancement at a Spirit Mirror should not be confused with enhancing Charms, which instead happens at Enma's Hall in Rokudo-chinnoji Temple and uses red souls together with offerings rather than the equipment-specific materials used here.
