Full article on companion relationship mechanics and their integration with daily life systems
The Affinity System lets players build relationships with playable characters outside of combat. Increasing a character's affinity unlocks personal story scenes, gameplay bonuses, and interactions that flesh out who they are beyond their combat kit. The system ties into the daily life simulation side of the game alongside side activities and housing.
Players can bring characters along while exploring Hethereau. Companions react to locations, comment on events, and sometimes trigger unique dialogue when visiting specific places. Walking around the city with a character gradually increases their affinity. Players can hold hands with companions while walking, confirmed during the Co-Ex Test. Each character has preferred locations and activities that yield higher affinity gains.
Many of the game's side activities can be played together with companions. Fishing, mahjong, and other activities provide affinity bonuses when done with a specific character. Characters have different preferences and may be better at certain mini-games than others.
Dedicated companion interaction mini-games include rock-paper-scissors and ear cleaning. These are simpler than the city-wide side activities but are quick affinity builders that can be done anywhere.
Once a character reaches a certain affinity threshold, players can invite them to visit their apartment. These visits trigger unique conversations and interactions that are not available elsewhere. The apartment's decoration and furniture (managed through the housing system) can influence the visit.
Characters send text messages to the player through an in-game phone system. Messages change based on affinity level and story progress. Players can respond to these messages, and some responses affect affinity. The messaging system gives characters personality outside of cutscenes, with each character having a distinct texting style.
The summon system allows players to call a character to their current location for a brief interaction. This is separate from the combat party system. Summoned characters can provide commentary on the surroundings, participate in photo mode, or trigger affinity-building moments.
Higher affinity levels unlock character-specific rewards including lore entries, cosmetic items, and combat bonuses. The exact rewards vary by character. Maxing out a character's affinity provides the deepest insight into their backstory and motivations.
