Troll

Initial version (2026-09-16)
Trolls are the ultimate survivors of Eth-ur, tempered by millennia of war and catastrophe. They are one of three designed races that are not in the Early Access launch set, alongside the Deep Dwarf and the High Elf.
This race is not playable when Early Access opens on 1 October 2026. It is a fully designed race with its own lore entry and its own class list, but it is outside the launch set. The official material says only that Early Access carries a subset of the races planned for the 1.0 version. As of September 2026 no release window, patch number or ordering has been published for the three races held back, and none of the official wording promises one.
Trolls are believed to have arrived on the world during the first invasions of the Spiral Lords, which places them on the same timeline as the creation of the ogres, who were built to fight those invasions. The two races entered the setting as opposite sides of the same war.
After cutting a swath across the world, the trolls did something the ogres did not have to: they emancipated themselves from their masters. Having broken free, they melted away into the swamps, crags and caves that became their hunting grounds. Nobody conquered them and nobody absorbed them, and the lore treats that as the founding fact of the race.
The official material rates them at the top of a specific list: no race on the world has the physical resilience, natural adaptability or cunning of trolls. All three of those are survival traits rather than strengths in a fight, and the entry is careful about the distinction.
They are self-serving and distrustful of everyone, which the text extends explicitly to other trolls. Cruel, calculating and predatory, they are motivated by power, self-interest and survival, in that framing rather than by malice for its own sake.
What they value above all is independence. The lore puts it as a rule with an immediate exception: they bow only to power surpassing their own, but even then, that is what poison is for. Trolls are found across the continent of Aêthoril, not always welcomed and always watched closely.
Trolls are supremely crafty hunters, trappers and survivalists. The more ambitious hire themselves out, and the official material names three trades for them: vicious bounty hunters, assassins and beguilers. The third is the one that explains the Enchanter on their class list, which is otherwise an odd fit for a race defined by the wilderness.
No physical description of trolls has been published as of September 2026. Physical resilience and natural adaptability are named as qualities, but the material does not describe build, colouring or features.
Swamps, crags and caves across the continent. No troll settlement, city or territory is named. Because the race is outside the launch set, no starting city applies to it. See Starting Cities.
Eight classes are listed for the troll: a wilderness core in the Beastmaster, Druid and Shaman, the Fighter and Rogue for direct work, and the Necromancer, Shadow Knight and Enchanter for the rest. There is no divine class, no arcane artillery and no ranged class on the list, which makes the troll and the deep gnome the only races without a single ranged or divine option.
Class | Archetype | Group role |
|---|---|---|
Animal-Taming Primal Brawler | Melee damage, pet | |
Jack-of-All-Trades Caster | Healer, magic damage, support | |
Masterful Conductor | Crowd control, support, utility | |
Armored Juggernaut | Tank, melee damage | |
Master of Death | Magic damage, pet, utility | |
Opportunistic Striker | Melee damage | |
Antihero Monster Hunter | Tank, melee damage | |
Spirit Caller | Healer, magic damage, support |
The troll entry is the one place in the official material where the world's name is written Eth-Ur with a capital U. Every other occurrence spells it Eth-ur. This is an inconsistency in the source copy rather than an alternate name, and the lowercase form is correct.
As of September 2026, no racial stat block, attribute modifier, resistance value or racial ability list has been published for any race in Monsters & Memories. The official race material is lore plus a class list.
