Aethoril

Initial version (2026-09-16)
Aêthoril, officially spelled with a circumflex on the first e, is a continent on the world of Eth-ur. It is not the world itself. This article title is written without the circumflex for technical reasons; the correct in-world spelling is Aêthoril, and it is used throughout the body below.
The distinction matters in practice as well as in pedantry. Eth-ur is a planet with vast and dangerous oceans and other landmasses implied beyond them. Aêthoril is the one continent whose contents are documented, and essentially every zone, city and race homeland in Monsters & Memories sits on it or underneath it.
The official description is short and worth having in full shape. Aêthoril is a massive continent surrounded by black seas and shattered civilizations, littered with the broken remains of ancient lands and fallen gods. The ruin is the setting rather than the backstory.
The energies of the world are described as clearly focused on this continent, perhaps as a final bastion of warmth and light in a world that has seen so much conflict and catastrophe. The Fonts of Life still flow here, and the lands, both above and below, are densely packed with life and history. That is the in-fiction reason the game is set on one continent rather than spread across a globe.
The stated range runs north to south: frigid wastelands in the north, then rolling green plains, dense jungles, towering forests and sprawling deserts further south. Four of those map onto known content.
Biome | Where it appears in the known material |
|---|---|
Frigid northern wastelands | The resettled homeland of the ogres, after the Storm Coast shattered. |
Rolling green plains | Calafrey is described as the green lands to the north. |
Towering forests | The Evershade Weald, home of the wood elves and of the city of Faelindral. |
Sprawling deserts | Szuur, the mysterious desert region, which holds Night Harbor. |
Dense jungles | Named in the biome list. No jungle zone has been announced for Early Access as of September 2026. |
The continent has no published map key, but several locations are placed relative to each other across the race and world entries.
Place | Position | Association |
|---|---|---|
The Galdri Range | Great mountains to the east | The dwarven homeland in their creation myth, formed from the body of their ancestor titan. |
The western seaboard | West | Once spanned by the Calafrey Conglomerate, the elven empire the high elves claim descent from. |
Szuur | West coast and inland desert | Holds Night Harbor, the port on the western coast. See Zones. |
Calafrey | North of Szuur | The green and enchanted lands, home of the elves. Holds the Evershade Weald and Faelindral. |
Eastern Calafrey | East, and far below | Ail'vorith, the deep elf capital, lies deep beneath it. |
The Storm Coast | Unplaced | Shattered by an unnatural cataclysm. Named once, never located. |
The Heap | Unplaced, within a labyrinthine forest | The goblin home. Named once, never located. |
Three named regions carry all of the content available when Early Access opens on 1 October 2026.
Region | Description | Cities |
|---|---|---|
Szuur | The mysterious desert region, and the primary surface region at launch. | Night Harbor on the surface, The Underdocks far below it. |
Calafrey | The green lands to the north, also described as the enchanted lands of Calafrey, home of the elves. | Faelindral in the Evershade Weald. |
The Deep Region | Runs beneath both of the above. The content of the first module. See Descent into the Deep. | Ail'vorith, The Underdocks. |
Everything else on the continent is lore. The biome list promises jungles and plains that no announced zone yet covers, and the official material is explicit that Early Access carries a subset of what is planned for the 1.0 version. See Zones for the 28 zones that are in the launch build.
The Deep is not a region of Aêthoril in the way Szuur and Calafrey are. It spans the entirety of Eth-ur, and the various Deep regions that are playable at launch connect to one another and together span all of Aêthoril. In effect the continent has a second continent underneath it. See Descent into the Deep.
The official spelling is Aêthoril. Secondary write-ups routinely drop the circumflex, and this wiki's article title does so as well because the accented character does not survive slug generation cleanly. In article prose the accented form is correct.
