Heavy Bowgun

Initial version (2026-09-08)
The Heavy Bowgun is one of the seven weapon types in Monster Hunter Outlanders at launch and one of two ranged options alongside the Bow. It is the game's ammunition weapon, and its kit is built around managing what it is loaded with.
The weapon uses a variety of ammo types. Beyond that, special ammo exists as a separate limited resource: it is capped, and it replenishes either over time or when shots land. That second condition matters, because it means accuracy feeds the ammo economy rather than simply consuming it, and a player who lands shots consistently spends less time waiting.
Perfect Evades on the Heavy Bowgun allow either movement or counter follow-ups. This is one of the clearest statements that Perfect Evade is a shared system with per-weapon payoffs: on the Great Sword it preserves a charge, on the Bow it maxes a gauge, and here it opens a choice between repositioning and answering back.
The Heavy Bowgun is the only weapon so far confirmed to use a Perfect Guard, and its effect is an instant reload. A ranged weapon that blocks is unusual on its face, and tying the reward to reloading makes the block part of the ammo economy rather than a purely defensive move.
The weapon can switch to Wyvernheart to unleash devastating firepower. This is confirmed as a mode the player switches into rather than a single shot, though nothing further about its duration, cost or behaviour has been published.
Mechanic | Confirmed behaviour |
|---|---|
Ammo | A variety of types are available |
Special ammo | Limited; replenishes over time or when shots land |
Perfect Evade | Allows movement, or a counter follow-up |
Perfect Guard | Instantly reloads ammo |
Wyvernheart | A mode switched into for heavy sustained firepower |
Pepper is the revealed Adventurer who carries the Heavy Bowgun, classed as Disruptor. She is described as unleashing powerful shots from range, and some of her skills send her airborne so that she can fire rapidly from midair. That aerial option is unique among the revealed characters and is a character skill rather than a property of the weapon itself.
