Lords of the Fallen II is set in a dying dark fantasy world. A thousand years have passed since a catastrophe known as the Great Rupture, and since then an Umbral darkness has consumed the world one realm and one nation at a time.
Only one kingdom remains, a sacred land shrouded by an ancient protective force, where the last of humanity once found sanctuary. As that light fades and the darkness rises, the Eternal Night draws near. In the game's own framing, a hero must rise, for a God to fall.
The Encroaching Darkness
The calamity at the heart of the story is the spread of Umbral, the realm of the dead. Its veil with the living world has grown thin enough for horrors to slip between worlds, and humanity has been all but forsaken. Even the gods are said to hide from the encroaching gloom.
The Last Kingdom
The surviving kingdom, Thorngar, is humanity's final bastion and the land the player journeys through. It is besieged from within as the two realms bleed together and the Lords of Darkness close in.
The Hero
The player takes the role of a lone Lampbearer, burdened with an impossible task. The sequel is set long after the events of the first game, around a century later by the developers' framing, with the Great Rupture itself lying a thousand years in the past.
A Mature Tale
The studio has described this entry as its most violent and mature to date, rated for adult audiences, with extreme gore woven into both its story and its combat.
