Revision 3

Crafting in Windrose follows the standard survival game pattern of gathering materials and combining them at workstations. What sets it apart are several quality-of-life decisions that cut out common frustrations.

Shared Base Storage

The most praised crafting feature: any resources stored at your base can be accessed from crafting stations without carrying them in your inventory. If you have 200 wood in a chest at your base, you can use that wood at your workbench without picking it up first. This one change eliminates the constant inventory shuffling that plagues most survival games.

Crafting Stations

Different station types handle different item categories. Stations can be upgraded to unlock higher-tier recipes.

Station Upgrades

Crafting stations have numbered upgrade levels (Workbench 1, Workbench 2, etc.). Recipes unlock progressively as you gather new materials. You can also place attachments within your bonfire radius to expand what existing stations can produce:

• Sawhorse: Placed near the Workbench to unlock additional woodworking recipes

• Toolbox: Placed near the Workbench to unlock higher-tier tool recipes

• Cutting Table: Upgrade for the Cooking Fire, unlocking more food recipes

• Cookware Shelf: Further Cooking Fire upgrade for advanced meals

Key Early Recipes

Resource Gathering

Raw materials come from standard survival sources: trees, rocks, ore deposits, plants, and animal drops. Resources vary by biome, encouraging exploration of the wider archipelago rather than farming one island. Caves scattered across islands contain ore deposits for mining.

NPC Automation

Players who prefer not to gather materials manually can assign NPC workers to handle gathering and basic crafting tasks. The NPCs work while you are off exploring or fighting, and you pay them with in-game currency. This keeps the economy meaningful while respecting the player's time. See settlement building for more on the NPC workforce.

Food and Buffs

Food crafting is particularly important because eating is the primary way to boost your stats. There are no hunger or thirst bars in Windrose. Instead, different food items provide temporary buffs lasting 7 minutes to health, stamina, and combat effectiveness. Players can stack up to three different food and drink buffs simultaneously (two food plus one drink). Better food provides stronger buffs, so cooking becomes more valuable as the game progresses.

Disassembly Bench

The Disassembly Bench recycles unwanted weapons, armor, and tools for 100% material recovery. This means you never waste resources on gear you end up replacing. It encourages experimentation with different equipment since you can always get your materials back.

Weapon and Armor Upgrades

Weapons and armor can be upgraded at the appropriate crafting stations using materials. The upgrade system increases weapon damage, armor durability, and bag capacity. Specialized upgrade items found through exploration can advance weapons from one rarity tier to the next.
