Missions

Updated internal link states after new pages were added (2026-09-12)
Missions are the scripted story jobs that carry the plot of Grand Theft Auto VI forward, following Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos through the conspiracy described in the official synopsis. As of 12 September 2026 Rockstar Games has published no mission list, no mission count, no mission names and no chapter structure for the game. This page covers only what the studio's own product copy and its August 2026 gameplay showcase establish about how missions work.
Readers should treat any mission list circulating from unauthorised footage as unverified. Rockstar has authenticated none of it, and nothing from that material appears on this page.
Aspect | What Is Known | Status |
|---|---|---|
Player count | A single-player experience. The storefront listings give a player count of one and a single-player capability flag. | Confirmed in Rockstar and platform-holder copy |
Protagonists | Two playable leads whose availability varies by mission. | Confirmed |
Protagonist gating | Some missions lock the player to one lead, some force a swap at a set point, and some let the player choose. | Stated by the studio's head of development, August 2026 |
Money gating | Some story missions can stay locked until the player has enough cash. | Reported from a studio preview, September 2026 |
Failure and pursuit | Missions can collapse into a police pursuit that has to be shaken before the job can continue. | Shown in the gameplay showcase |
Mission list | Not published. | Unannounced as of 12 September 2026 |
Rockstar's own pre-order announcement of 24 June 2026 describes the game as a single-player experience, and both console storefronts list it with a player count of one. No cooperative or online mission mode has been announced as of 12 September 2026. Missions, on everything published so far, are played alone.
Missions do not give free access to both leads. In an August 2026 interview the head of development at Rockstar North said that some missions lock the player to a single protagonist, some force a switch partway through, and some leave the choice open. That makes character switching a mission-design tool rather than a free-roam convenience, and it means a given job can be built around one lead's position, equipment or cover story.
The rooftop meeting with Brian Heder and Lori Heder in the gameplay showcase is an example of a scene that holds the player on one protagonist throughout.
Story progress is tied to the economy. Reporting from a September 2026 studio visit describes story missions that stay locked until the player has accumulated enough money, which pushes players toward robberies and heists, side activities and other earning routes between story beats. Rockstar has not published the thresholds, nor said how many missions are gated this way.
The 27 August 2026 showcase, An Extended Look, is the largest body of confirmed gameplay footage released so far. Four sequences in it are structured like story jobs. Rockstar has not said whether any of them is a discrete mission, where it falls in the story, or whether the footage is contiguous.
Sequence | What Happens | Named Figures |
|---|---|---|
Drug pickup | A collection at a Vice City apartment block that turns into a betrayal and a police drug bust, ending in a shootout escape with the product. | Boobie Ike, a contact named Ray |
Rooftop meeting | A job handed over during dinner at a rooftop bar in downtown Vice City, with a warning to Jason not to sink any deeper. The player stays on one protagonist. | |
Getaway driving | Jason and Lucia drive the getaway from a robbery, run a four-star pursuit, torch the car, and are then brought into the crew. | |
Hostage siege | The pair work private security at the opening of a Spanish-language television network's first American headquarters, which turns into an armed siege and ends with disguises and a private plane. | Valentina, a business figure reported as Andres |
Several confirmed systems shape how a mission plays rather than what it is about.
System | How It Applies to Missions |
|---|---|
Police attention runs to six stars and needs a witness or an alarm to trigger. On-screen icons track what the police have identified, and splitting up, changing clothes or swapping cars lowers that. | |
Criminal Profile | A reputation state tracked separately for each protagonist, shaped by how violently jobs are carried out. Rockstar describes it as characterisation rather than punishment. |
Players can wound or disarm rather than kill, and can deliberately miss to make officers take cover. | |
Focus and killcams | A focus meter drives a slow-motion state with vitals highlighting, and killcams play on certain eliminations. |
Quick-time prompts | Some close-quarters moments offer two on-screen button choices rather than a single scripted outcome. |
Weapon visibility | Two handguns can be carried concealed at all times, while long guns are visible and draw reactions from civilians and police. |
Masks, face coverings, haircuts and outfit changes are used to shed police attention during and after a job. |
One Rockstar developer's playthrough was described in August 2026 as taking around 80 hours. That is a single internal figure, not a published completion time, and Rockstar has not broken it down between story missions and everything else.
The Ultimate Edition adds content that Rockstar describes as threaded through the story rather than bolted on. Two entries in that copy are job-shaped: a raid on the compound of a Southside Vice City gang, and a classic car collection commissioned by a local fixer. The edition's 1995 Grotti Cheetah is described as available to punctuate later-stage action, which implies the edition content is spread across the campaign rather than unlocked at the start.
Every item below was checked on 12 September 2026 against Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive statements and both console storefront listings.
No mission list, mission count, mission names or chapter structure.
No difficulty settings, and no description of how missions are checkpointed, retried or replayed.
No scoring or objective-medal system of the kind used in earlier Rockstar games.
No cooperative or online mission mode.
No post-launch story content.
No statement on how many missions are gated to a single protagonist.
These are absences in the published record as of that date, not statements that the features are missing from the game.
