The Arbor's Crucible is a special survival mode in Ember and Blade. It was first introduced as an arena during a Steam Next Fest, where players survive for as long as possible against waves of infinitely-spawning demons to earn points. Rather than staying tied to that single event, it has since returned as a recurring limited-time mode in later demo builds.
The Arbor's Crucible was first added to the demo build for a Steam Next Fest as an extra mode tied to that event rather than part of the main campaign. It did not stay a one-time festival feature. It returned as a limited-time event in a later November period and came back again alongside a 2026 prologue build, making it a recurring challenge that resurfaces with major demo updates. Its appearances are part of the broader run of updates documented in Demo History.

The mode is built around a simple, high-pressure goal: stay alive. Players hold out for as long as they can, and the longer they survive, the more points they earn. This turns the experience into a score-chasing test of endurance and skill, distinct from the structured, story-driven progression of the campaign.
What makes the Crucible relentless is that the demons never stop coming. Enemies spawn infinitely, so there is no point at which the battlefield clears. The mode leans hard into the game's one-versus-many fantasy of carving through endless hordes, demanding constant movement, smart use of abilities, and careful management of the chaos. The wider enemy design is covered in Enemies and Demon Hordes.
Where the campaign advances through chapters and bosses toward a larger goal, the Arbor's Crucible is a self-contained survival challenge focused purely on lasting as long as possible. It distills the moment-to-moment thrill of the combat into an endless arena. For how that combat works across the rest of the game, see Gameplay Overview.
When the Arbor's Crucible returned as a limited-time event, it ran under the name the Infernal Trial. One confirmed run of the event was held from November 10 to December 8, with players battling waves of enemies under randomized blessings to climb a global leaderboard. The leaderboard was split into three weapon categories, Sword, Dagger, and Hammer, so each fighting style competed on its own board, with ten winners recognized in total across the categories. Top finishers were promised in-game recognition, including weapon name variants adapted into the game's lore and credits placement in the full release. The leaderboard was fully reset when the event opened, giving every player a fresh start.
Because it keeps coming back, the Arbor's Crucible functions as a recurring endgame test rather than a piece of one-off festival content. Each return gives returning players a familiar high-pressure arena to measure their builds against the latest combat and progression changes. The mode's core stays the same across appearances: an endless, score-chasing survival challenge that distills the game's one-versus-many combat, separate from the structured, story-driven campaign. For how that combat works across the rest of the game, see Gameplay Overview.
