Saayu is one of the friends the protagonist made during the closed beta test of Sword Art Online, and one of the five characters the game's marketing introduced by name before launch. She is described in official materials as the cheerful heart of the party.

Not a Selectable Partner
This is the point most often misreported. Saayu appears on the official character line-up alongside Iori, Argo, Zash, and Wyzeman, but unlike those four she has never been given a weapon label, and post-launch coverage of the full partner roster does not include her. She is not one of the characters you can take into a quest, which is why no weapon type was ever published for her: there is no partner loadout to publish.
The full list of characters who can fill the partner slot is on the NPC Companions page.
Story Role
Saayu is present through the opening stretch of the campaign as part of the beta-test friend group, and reappears in the Town of Beginnings after the death game begins. Her arc is one of the game's main vehicles for the pressure the trapped players are under: beta testers become a target for suspicion and hostility from the wider population, and she is on the receiving end of it along with another beta tester she is hiding with.
Her storyline resolves during a main quest that sends the party into the hills northeast of the starting region. She does not survive it. The event is the hinge the first act turns on, and the party's visit to the Monument of Life afterwards, the memorial inside the building behind the Main Terminal where a player's status can be looked up by name, is where the consequences land.
That sequence is also what moves the central Swordsman of Salvation quest from a curiosity into the campaign's driving thread.
Why the Distinction Matters
Several fan-run guides list Saayu as a recruitable companion, sometimes alongside other names lifted from cast credits. Treat those lists with caution. The characters confirmed as partners each have a published weapon type and a named pair of Combination and Support Skills; Saayu has neither, and the reason is her role in the story rather than an information gap that a future patch will fill.
