The Abyssal Dragon is the player character of Dinghai: The Ocean Pillar, named Xuanlong in the game's Chinese and Japanese material. He was once the strongest commander serving under Emperor Yan, who valued him highly and granted him his name. After the Battle of Banquan that granted name was stripped from him and he was cast into exile, and he fell in the campaign known as Jueditiantong. For four centuries after his death only a sliver of his soul survived, wearing away through that long stretch of despair.

Through a forbidden curse, he seizes a new body, that of Yi, and returns to the mortal world, carrying the weight of unfinished business and a regret that even death could not bury. His return sets the events of the story in motion. He is described as returning determined to settle the enmity of his fate with his own hands, and uncovering what became of the vanished flood hero Yu is part of that journey.

He does not travel alone. In seizing the body he spared what was left of Yi, turning him into a fledgling of the ancient divine bird Yujia (羽嘉), who accompanies him from then on.

Appearance

Official key art and character art show him with long white hair and green eyes, a translucent blue horn rising from one temple with faint scale-like markings beneath it, and a blue-grey robe worn with a dark shoulder guard and a tasselled ornament. He carries a sheathed straight sword, and a long ringed staff stands behind him in the key art. What that staff is has not been stated.

Across each run, the Abyssal Dragon fights with a chosen pair of weapons and an evolving set of abilities. Name

English-language material refers to the character only as the Abyssal Dragon. The Chinese and Japanese releases give his personal name as 玄龍, romanized Xuanlong and read Genryu in Japanese. Both refer to the same character, and no other name has been given for him.
