Dinghai: The Ocean Pillar unfolds in the world of the Classic of Mountains and Seas, an ancient mythology of gods, demons, and monstrous creatures. It is a realm scarred by catastrophic floods and the conflict between divine powers.
The player character is the Abyssal Dragon, a legendary general who once served under Emperor Yan. He was the strongest commander in that court. After the Battle of Banquan he was stripped of his name and banished, and he fell in the campaign known as Jueditiantong. For centuries only a fragment of his soul endured. Meanwhile Emperor Shun had charged Yi, the godson of the flood-taming hero Yu, with assisting his godfather against the floods, and a plot cost Yi his life at Mount Buzhou. In the moments before death claimed him, the surviving fragment seized his body through a forbidden curse. The Abyssal Dragon walks among mortals once more, carrying centuries of unfinished business and seeking to uncover what became of Yu.
A World of Gods and Demons
The setting draws on the creatures and geography of classical mythology, where ancient gods and demons vie for power across a flood-ravaged land. The only terrain hinted at so far ranges from storm-lashed mountains to celestial islands hidden beyond the sky. The fuller shape of this world is described in The Mythic World. Three parts of that world have since been named: Mount Buzhou, the rapids of Longmen, and a set of outlying isles.
The Ocean Pillar
The object the title refers to is a sea-stabilizing divine iron. Official material attributes a prophecy about it to Laojun, who is said to have spoken once the forging was done: the iron would pass through three masters. The English trailer renders the line as "Three masters shall claim this iron." Who those masters are has not been stated, and the iron has not been shown in play.
A Soul That Survived
The premise centers on a question the game poses directly: what does a soul that has survived everything still have left to fight for? The Abyssal Dragon’s return drives the story, and his search for the fate of Yu frames the journey. Coverage here reflects only what has been confirmed about the game’s premise.
Themes
Justdan describes the story as one built around betrayal, obsession, and the search for self, assembled by the player out of fragments found across the world. Three threads are named as running through it: the mystery of Yu's disappearance, the wish Yi never fulfilled, and the regret the Abyssal Dragon pursued his whole life without ever resolving.
