The Champion of Old begins with a fresco and key found while exploring the ruins in A Hero's End. Following the clue leads to Erkas the Repenter and a separate equipment reward.

Finding the fresco and chamber
The fresco is in a side room adjoining the glowing area before the Betrayed Hero's boss chamber. Investigate it and take the Decrepit Key before leaving the ruins.
The resulting marker points into Maragir Wealds, east of Briar Sloughs Watchtower Shrine. Defeat the enemies on the approach, climb the hill and enter the underground passage. Cut through the vines to reach the chamber.
Erkas the Repenter
Use Focus Mode to find the two murals and the coffin. Inspecting the chamber's objects awakens Erkas the Repenter. Defeat him, then loot his body to complete the quest and obtain Erkas's Sword.
The body also carries Silver Earrings and 74 Denarii. These looted items are separate from the experience and skill point awarded for completion.
