Initial version: White Bearclaw world boss guide
White Bearclaw is a World Boss encountered in the far northwest of the Pailune region. This massive, snow-white bear rests on the cliffs of Five-Finger Mountain near the White Wastes Sanctuary, often accompanied by its cubs. White Bearclaw is classified as a legendary creature, and defeating it is required to obtain the White Bear as a permanent mount. Children throughout Pailune grow up hearing stories of this beast, a creature whose enormous frame and fur as white as snow have made it a symbol of untamed wilderness in the high mountain peaks.
White Bearclaw is widely considered the most straightforward of the three legendary mount bosses added in patch 1.01.00, but it still presents a serious threat to unprepared players. Its grab attack, heavy swipes, and multi-strike combos can quickly turn the fight if you wade in without caution. The boss has a significant weakness to fire, which dramatically simplifies the encounter when exploited properly.
White Bearclaw is closely associated with the White Bear of the High Mountains, another legendary creature found in the same region with a similar reputation. The two are considered companions or kin by local Pailune folklore.

White Bearclaw is found at Five-Finger Mountain in the far northwest corner of Pailune. The easiest way to reach it is through the White Wastes Sanctuary, which has an Abyss Nexus fast travel point. From the Sanctuary, head south a short distance and look for the bear resting on the cliffsides above, typically with one or more cubs nearby.
The mountain terrain presents a secondary hazard. During the fight, keep the bear away from cliff edges. Getting knocked off the mountain counts as a death unrelated to the boss's actual damage output, which can be frustrating. Pull White Bearclaw to a flat area before committing to the fight.
Tip: Using Leebur's Soul, a key item that drops from the Black Fang boss, will unlock knowledge entries for all legendary animals and reveal their map locations, making it easier to track down White Bearclaw and the other legendary creatures in Pailune.
White Bearclaw fights like a powerful apex predator. Its attacks are wide-reaching and hit hard, but its patterns are readable. Learning when to dodge versus when to counterattack is the key to a clean fight.
Attack | Description | How to Counter |
|---|---|---|
Wide Swipe | A broad horizontal claw swipe that covers a large arc in front of the bear. The attack has long reach and deals heavy damage. Often performed twice in quick succession as a combo. | Step or dodge to the side rather than directly backward. The arc does not extend far to the bear's flanks, so a lateral dodge clears the hitbox reliably. Do not try to block, as the hit will drain stamina. |
Multi-Swipe Combo | A sequence of two to three claw swipes chained together. Each strike follows quickly after the last, with minimal recovery time between them. The final hit in the combo has a wider arc than the opening strikes. | Dodge the first strike to create distance, then wait out the full combo before retaliating. Attempting to attack between combo strikes often results in being caught by the next hit in the sequence. |
Grab Attack | White Bearclaw lunges forward and attempts to grab the player with its forepaws. If the grab connects, it deals burst damage and can fling the player a significant distance, which is especially dangerous near cliff edges. | When the bear begins a forward lunge at close range, dodge to either side rather than backward. The grab has a narrow hitbox in the lateral direction and will whiff if you step out of the frontal cone. |
Charge | The bear rushes forward to close distance at speed, often transitioning directly into a swipe or grab. Used when the player retreats to mid-range. | Watch for the bear lowering its head before the charge. Time a dodge roll to the side as it closes in. The charge itself is the setup for a follow-up attack, so prepare to dodge again immediately after the initial sidestep. |
White Bearclaw has a significant weakness to fire. When hit with fire-based attacks, the bear will roll on the ground and writhe as it tries to extinguish the flames. This reaction completely suppresses its attack patterns and provides a long, safe window for landing combos without any risk of retaliation.
Before the fight, equip fire arrows or prepare fire oils to coat your weapon. Opening the encounter by landing a fire attack immediately knocks the bear into its writhing animation, allowing free damage from the very start. Once the effect wears off, move out of range and reapply fire before the next exchange. Cycling through fire attacks and punish windows is the most efficient and safest way to deplete White Bearclaw's health.
White Bearclaw's location on a clifftop introduces a terrain hazard that can kill you faster than the boss itself. Before engaging in earnest, spend a moment maneuvering the bear toward a flat, open area away from edges. If you get knocked off by a swipe or grab near the cliff, the fall will kill you regardless of your remaining health. Taking a few extra seconds to establish a safe fighting zone eliminates this risk entirely.
The Frozen Anguish performs well against White Bearclaw due to the range it provides. The bear's heavy swipes are dangerous at close quarters, so fighting with a weapon that lets you strike from slightly further away reduces the number of attacks you need to dodge while still landing consistent damage. Ranged weapons paired with fire arrows are also highly effective, especially for landing the fire weakness proc safely.
White Bearclaw rests near its cubs on the mountainside. The cubs are not aggressive by default, but the chaos of fighting the large bear near them can cause you to accidentally target the wrong creature or get caught in an awkward position. Focus entirely on White Bearclaw and avoid attacking the cubs, as they are not part of the boss encounter and engaging them only adds unnecessary complications.
Open with a fire arrow or oil to trigger the fire weakness writhing animation.
Land a full combo during the fire suppression window before the effect expires.
Create distance, apply fire again, and repeat the cycle.
If fire resources run out, fight defensively: dodge all combo attacks fully before punishing with one or two strikes.
Keep the fight away from cliff edges at all times.
After defeating White Bearclaw, interact with its body to Skin the creature and obtain the White Bear Claw key item. This also unlocks the White Bear Knowledge entry in your bestiary. Both the claw and the knowledge entry are required before you can craft the mount.
Bring the White Bear Claw to any Witch (including Elowen at the Witch's Lair) to craft the Sigil of Solidarity (White Bear), which allows you to summon the White Bear as a permanent mount. Note: you must first reach Chapter 5 and complete the Guest Unbidden: Black and White quest to unlock the mount crafting option.
Reward | Description |

Sigil of Solidarity (White Bear) | Crafted at any Witch using the White Bear Claw. Allows the White Bear to be summoned as a permanent rideable mount. |
Once crafted into a mount, the White Bear retains its combat stats from the boss encounter, making it the highest base-damage mount in the game. With 1,560 HP and 180 Attack, it outclasses the other legendary mounts in raw offensive power, though it moves more slowly than horses.
As a mount, White Bear can attack enemies while ridden. It also fights alongside you when dismounted, making it useful as a combat companion even when you prefer to fight on foot. The mount performs a swipe attack with R2 and a multi-swipe combo with R1+R2. Its size and aggressive combat behavior make it one of the most visually distinctive mounts available.

Attack | 180 (highest base damage of all legendary mounts) |

According to local Pailune lore, White Bearclaw is described as a legendary bear born of a betrayed warrior's transformation. It is said that the creature's soul carries the grief and rage of someone wronged, which is reflected in its solitary existence at the highest, coldest peaks of the Silverwolf Mountains. The bear's massive frame and fur as white as snow have made it an enduring figure in Pailune storytelling.
Children of Pailune grow up hearing stories of White Bearclaw. It occupies a place in local culture somewhere between monster and spirit, a creature of immense power that is feared but also respected. The ability to defeat it and earn its loyalty as a mount is treated as a mark of exceptional strength and courage.
Always exploit the fire weakness. A single fire attack triggers a long writhing animation that provides free damage.
Fight on flat ground. Cliff edges kill faster than the boss if you get knocked off.
Dodge sideways rather than backward against the wide swipe and grab attacks.
Wait out the full multi-swipe combo before retaliating. Attacking mid-combo is risky.
Use Leebur's Soul (drops from Black Fang) to reveal White Bearclaw's exact map location.
The Frozen Anguish weapon's range advantage reduces how often you need to enter close-quarters range.
Remember to skin the body after the kill to receive the White Bear Claw key item.
You must complete Chapter 5 and the Guest Unbidden: Black and White quest before the mount can be crafted.
