Crimson Desert uses a dual save system that combines automatic saving with a Save Anytime manual option. This approach suits the open-world structure, letting players explore freely without worrying about losing progress while also giving full control to save before risky encounters. "Save Anytime" is listed as an accessibility feature on the official Steam store page. The autosave system is described as extremely robust, and it is rare to lose more than a few minutes of progress from an unexpected death.
The autosave system runs continuously in the background and triggers at key moments throughout gameplay. The game maintains three dedicated autosave slots that occupy the first three positions in the save file list. These three slots cycle automatically based on your latest activity, so at any given time you have three recent autosave checkpoints to fall back on. The autosave slots cannot be deleted or overwritten manually.
Trigger | Description |
|---|---|
Entering combat | The game saves when you engage enemies, preserving your state before the fight |
Exiting combat | A fresh save is created after combat ends, locking in loot and XP gains |
Collecting key items | Picking up gear, resources, or quest items triggers an autosave |
Reaching new areas | Entering a new zone, settlement, or dungeon creates a checkpoint |
Periodic interval | The game saves at regular intervals during open-world exploration |
Quest milestones | Completing objectives or reaching story beats triggers a save |
Acquiring important items | Solving a puzzle, picking up a significant collectible, or looting a chest triggers a save |
Talking to key NPCs | Conversations with quest-critical characters create a checkpoint |
The autosave cannot be disabled. Crimson Desert does not offer the option to turn off the autosave feature, so your latest progress is always backed up regardless of whether you also save manually.
Players can create a manual save at any point during gameplay. To save manually, open the pause menu, navigate to the Others tab, then scroll to Options and select Save or Load Game. From there you can view all your save files, pick an empty slot, and overwrite it with your current progress. This feature is especially useful before:
Boss fights: Save before entering a boss arena so you can retry without replaying approach content
Branching decisions: Some quests have choices with lasting consequences. A manual save lets you explore different paths
Risky exploration: Before jumping into an unfamiliar Abyss Dungeon or hostile territory
Experimenting with builds: Save before investing Abyss Fragments into the perk tree to test different configurations
Before committing crimes: Save before pickpocketing or stealing so you can reload if the wanted system consequences are too harsh
The save file list contains a fixed number of slots:
Slot Type | Count | Details |
|---|---|---|
Autosave slots | 3 | Occupy the first three positions. Cycle automatically based on latest activity. Cannot be deleted. |
Manual save slots | 9 | Empty slots available for player-created saves. Once all nine are filled, you must overwrite or delete an existing save to create a new one. |
Total slots | 12 | Three autosaves plus nine manual saves. The list does not expand beyond this. |
Each save file displays the save timestamp, the chapter and quest name, Kliff's level, play time, and a thumbnail screenshot of the moment the save was created. The overwrite confirmation prompt warns you before replacing an existing manual save.
On PC, save files are stored locally at a platform-specific path. Knowing the location is helpful for manual backups and troubleshooting corrupted saves.
Platform | Save File Path |
|---|---|
PC (Steam / Epic) | C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\PearlAbyss\CrimsonDesert\SaveGames\ |
PC (Xbox / Microsoft Store) | C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\Packages\PearlAbyss.CrimsonDesert_[ID]\SystemAppData\wgs\ |
Steam Deck / Linux | /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/[AppID]/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/PearlAbyss/CrimsonDesert/SaveGames/ |
PlayStation 5 | Managed by the console's system storage. Access via Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings. |
Xbox Series X|S | Managed by the console's cloud/local storage. Xbox Play Anywhere titles sync saves between Xbox and PC via the Microsoft Store version. |
On Windows, you can reach the save folder quickly by pressing Win + R, typing %localappdata%, and then navigating to PearlAbyss > CrimsonDesert > SaveGames. If the AppData folder is not visible, enable "Hidden items" in File Explorer's View tab.
Crimson Desert does not support cross-save across platforms. Pearl Abyss confirmed this in the official pre-launch FAQ. Players who own the game on multiple platforms must maintain separate save files on each one. There is no way to transfer progress between PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC.
The one exception involves Xbox Play Anywhere. Because Crimson Desert is an Xbox Play Anywhere title, saves purchased through the Microsoft Store sync between Xbox consoles and PC via the Microsoft Store version. This does not extend to the Steam or Epic Games Store versions of the game.
Steam Cloud is supported on PC for the Steam version. If Steam Cloud sync causes save conflicts (saves reverting or disappearing), you can temporarily disable it by right-clicking the game in your Steam Library, selecting Properties, and toggling Steam Cloud off. Play and save manually, then re-enable it.
Create a manual save before every boss. Autosave is reliable, but a manual save gives you a precise restart point
Keep a "clean" save at major story milestones (for example, before entering a new region of Pywel) in case you want to revisit choices
Since you only have nine manual save slots, periodically delete old saves you no longer need to keep slots available for new checkpoints
The autosave covers most situations well. If you die to a regular enemy, the autosave usually puts you back just moments before the fight
On console, the system-level rest mode preserves your session, but always create a manual save before turning off the console to be safe
Back up your SaveGames folder on PC before installing patches or mods. This protects against data loss from cloud sync conflicts or update-related corruption
The configuration file is located at AppData\Local\PearlAbyss\CrimsonDesert\Config\Settings.ini. Always back it up before editing, as broken entries can cause the BlackSpace Engine to crash on startup
